The Elsevier Research Technology division focuses on enhancing the performance of Elsevier’s online Researcher Platforms, specifically those devoted to publishing, big data and machine learning, research enablement and Research Intelligence
 
About the Role
 
You will be part of an Architectural team contributing to the definition of the Enterprise Architecture for the Research Technology unit within Elsevier, communicating and evangelizing the architecture (principles, policies, standards, and patterns) to development groups, business groups, and customers. Additionally, responsibilities include governing adherence to critical architectural principles (sometimes known as the “golden rules”) and working with other Architects and Sr. Architects as a key interaction point for communication, evangelism, governance, and feedback into central architecture. The position also works with Business/Product Strategy in order to stay up to date with business/product direction in order to anticipate long lead-time technology needs and works with Elsevier Labs to understand where new technology/innovation might solve upcoming business problems. This position also performs baseline logical reviews on key systems.
 
About You
 
You will be responsible for
• Communicating complicated technology concepts in an understandable manner in terms of business impact so that business decisions can be made.
• Working with Business/Product Strategy in order to stay up to date with business/product direction in order to anticipate long lead-time technology needs.
• Performing technical evaluations of new technology and acquisition candidates as required.
• Assisting in the development of comprehensive information security procedures and practices and deployment of a detailed security audit.
• Defining and implementing a technology strategy that aligns to the Elsevier Reference Architecture.
• Planning for the evolution of the Business Unit systems, including the retirement and replacement of existing systems.

Your Technical Skills

 

• Master level in architectural design; master-level knowledge of architectural governance.

• Strong understanding of algorithms, complexity theory, programming languages, software engineering, and database theory.

• Proven experience of leading complex projects and customer relationships.

• Proven experience in information technology and solutions for professional media businesses.

• Proven ability to work with external vendors to understand/communicate vendor technology strategy in the context of our architecture, as well as future engineering architectural strategies.

• Master-level knowledge in programming language(s); e.g., Java, HTML, Python, C++, Go, Scala, etc.; or expert level in engineering discipline.

• Innovative and solutions-oriented in new technologies, security, and infrastructure.

• Expert in a plurality of the following technologies: Parallel and Distributed Processing Systems, Information Retrieval, Text and Data Mining, Natural Language Processing, Very Large Scale Databases, Declarative Languages, and High-Performance Computing.

• Solid working knowledge in a plurality of the following areas: Network Design (LAN and WAN), Storage System Architectures, Service-Oriented Architecture technologies, XML and XSLT, and Distributed Data Processing Architectures (such as Hadoop and Spark).

• Experience with a plurality of the following operating systems: Windows Server, UNIX (Linux), Mac OS X and iOS.

• Advanced organization/project planning, time management, and change management skills across multiple functional groups and departments, and advanced delegation skills involving prioritizing and reprioritizing projects and managing projects of various size and complexity.

• Excellent problem-solving experience involving leading teams in identifying, researching, and coordinating the resources necessary to effectively troubleshoot/diagnose complex project issues; prior success extracting/translating findings into alternatives/solutions; and identifying risks/impacts and schedule adjustments to facilitate management decision-making.
