Job Title:  Regional Controller (Europe)

Reports to:  Group Financial Controller

Based at:  Richmond, Greater London, UK


We are currently recruiting for a Regional Controller. This position is a business liaison partner and group level owner of information for their assigned region. Key responsibilities, working with one direct report, include management and statutory reporting, monitoring budgets and forecasts, business analysis, review of acquisition other investment proposals, monitoring of controls.  The role is based in the UK with some travel to business units.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Liaison: Underpinning the Regional Controller role is the development of knowledge of the designated region and the building of relationships with key management, in particular senior finance executives. 


The Regional Controller

• Monitors the business through its financials and other data, ensuring that the Group Financial Controller/Chief Financial Officer are made aware of developments which are significant to the financial / commercial management of the region

• Acts as partner to the business - first line of advice and support in relation to financial reporting, systems and control

• Supports both Group and where relevant Business Unit/ Regional management with business analysis to support decision making

• Shares Best Practice from elsewhere in the Group


There are occasional opportunities/ requirements to assist Business Units in a more hands on way with short secondments.


Reporting and Monitoring: (on average approximately 4-5 days per month plus variable follow on analysis work).  The Regional Controller ensures that high quality information for his/ her region is available to senior management, with focussed analysis and explanations.


Actuals (month and quarter end): the Regional Controller manages Business Unit submissions, ensuring through planning and review that the data held in Group Finance is complete, accurate and in accordance with relevant policies and GAAP.


• Anticipates and deals with any new technical issues

• Manages group level journals and intercompanies

• Presents a complete and accurate set of numbers and disclosures for internal management reporting and, on a statutory basis, for submission to the parent company.

• Performs or monitors certain key controls within the Reed Exhibitions SOX framework including focussed financial reviews of major shows

• Prepares appropriate contributions to Group reports and presentations,


Budgets, Forecasts and Strategic plans: The Regional Controller coordinates the process and advises group management on business unit expectations 

• Monitors sales and assesses sensitivities

• Monitors investments/ commercial initiatives

• Performs relevant analysis

• Attends management review meetings and draws out key points to enhance management understanding  

• Presents complete and accurate set of numbers for submission to the parent company

• Contributes to commentaries and presentations


Business Analysis and additional Group/ Business Unit support:

The Regional Controller

• Carries out ad –hoc projects e.g. investment proposals, specific business performance reviews

• Supports Group management in assessing potential acquisitions, following from initial proposals through due diligence to contracts, integration plans and acquisition accounting, plus post acquisition performance reviews

• Monitors the adequacy of internal controls, recommends improvements

• Liaises with the Risk and Compliance team within Group Finance


Regional Controllers also contribute to wider projects not directly linked to a particular region. Recent examples include a refresh of the group Sarbanes Oxley programme, process reviews, input to Chart of Accounts, cost analysis, sales dashboards, cross business launches, transfer pricing initiatives



Skills and Competencies:
• ACA or CIMA qualification, IFRS experience preferred
• Experienced in financial reporting, management and control within a multinational organisation
• Computer literate (experience of HFM or a similar consolidation system an advantage)
• Accurate, organised and methodical with an inquiring, analytical mind
• Proven ability to work to deadlines and flexibility to handle occasional heavy workloads/time pressures.
• Able to seek out and understand business unit needs, and committed to delivering high levels of service
• Forms working relationships and communicates effectively at various levels of the organisation, up to and including Board level, and across business cultures
• Analyses/ digests information and composes summaries targeted to specific agendas and audience. Able to articulate and assess risk/ sensitivity and benefits/ drawbacks of particular actions
• Challenges the status quo in a constructive manner and is able to formulate practical proposals for improvement
• A collaborative player, supportive to colleagues. Prioritises and coordinates own work and that of his/ her direct report within a team plan, and plans for contingencies.
• Able to support development of his/ her direct report.
• A second language is an advantage but not required (German/ French/ Russian most relevant)
