Head of Pricing

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious individual to join the Elsevier Pricing team as Head of Pricing. The pricing function is one of the key areas within the central Elsevier strategic function. The Head of Pricing reports to the VP Global Sales Effectiveness & Pricing and manages a small team of highly qualified analysts. 

As Head of Pricing, you will be responsible for the pricing of product groups vertically in a business unit, working across different departments like marketing, product management, sales and finance. You will be autonomously managing and delivering pricing projects which may consist of multiple work streams (such as customer analysis, insights creation, sales interviews, strategy workshops, scenario modelling, project planning, stakeholder management, customer negotiations on price, implementation planning...). 

You have knowledge of the pricing strategy, concepts and best practices which are relevant for the products you will be responsible for (mainly B2B, subscription-based solutions). You have strong project management, sales and communication skills, which are necessary because of the multidisciplinary nature of the function. You are an effective coach and advisor for sales managers, product managers, marketers, account managers, business development managers as well as pricing analysts who report to you indirectly.

Your responsibilities

Your activities will include:
  • Development of the strategic pricing agenda as well as the pricing strategy for a portfolio of Research Products
  • Development and maintenance of new product development Pricing methodologies incl. Willingness to pay studies
  • Drive incremental revenues for existing and new portfolio via Pricing (Research/WTP studies, Pricing insights from List price and/or Price realization analytics)
  • Development and maintenance of all product and services list prices in this business unit
  • Own a pricing deal desk which supports Sales for large customers
  • Deliver product group pricing or pricing project outcomes to respective business owner(s) (e.g. product, marketing, sales) and manage in the awareness of organizational behavior
  • Inform team members of pricing and project status (progress, planning, breakthrough, etc.) and identify trans-project opportunities
  • Manage workload of the team, set planning and align with stakeholders, manage delivery schedule according to planning
  • Display strong skills in close relation to creative conceptual thinking (in analyses, storylines, presentations, reports, etc.)
  • Display business and commercial awareness (e.g. trade-offs, cost-benefit, bottom-line impact) and manage planning

Occasional travel (20%) will be required.

What you will bring
The Elsevier pricing function aims to increase the company's revenue and profits by state of the art pricing: business models, pricing strategies, optimized list pricing and guarding the price execution. The pricing team works in close collaboration with the business owners in the different business units to drive change in their commercial processes and achieve the targeted results. The pricing team has an advisory role to the business owners, leads implementation in the commercial departments, hand over processes which have successfully been changed and monitors price performance and the quality of pricing policy on behalf of the Elsevier management team.

Skills & Experience – must haves

6+ years in Pricing with the following Pricing Domain expertise:
  • Strategic Pricing or in a top Tier (Pricing) Consultancy (Pricing Strategies and new product Pricing and Packaging) (specifically B2B subscription based pricing, preferably in a technology enabled environment)
  • Demonstrable track record of delivering results
  • Autonomously manage product group pricing and/or pricing projects end to end
  • Management experience of a highly analytical team
  • Experience in guarding Price Execution / Negotiation of large and complex Pricing proposals 
  • Highly analytical / very strong analysis skills whilst displaying creative conceptual thinking. 
  • Display relevant business sense and commercial acumen (e.g. trade-offs, bottom-line impact) 
  • The Head of Pricing is the go-to person for his/her domain within sales/marketing/product management/finance function as well as within central strategy function

Skills & Experience – desirable

  • Previous experience in information industry (software, publishing, …), or a research background
  • Degree in exact science (Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Econometrics, Statistics, Computer Science)
  • Strong leadership presence to inspire confidence in key stakeholders across the businesses  
  • Presents compellingly and convincingly to senior executives
  • Organizational and project management skills
  • Attitude & Personality
  • Proactive, results driven self-starter
  • Excellent communication skills and high emotional intelligence
  • Effective and persuasive communicator (verbal and written) with an ability to clearly summarize data, context and implications
  • Creative/innovative thinker with a pragmatic mind set

  • Able to operate in a multinational/multicultural environment (English is office language)
