ENGINEERING MANAGER – SOFTWARE DELIVERY

 

Location: Richmond, London, UK

Reports To: Director of Engineering

We’re building our next generation global events platform and services to enable our event teams to be able market and showcase our world-class exhibitions. Not only is the platform we are building is new but the team we’re bring together is too. This role will be responsible for the technical delivery of our global events platform. We are looking for an experienced software engineering manager who knows how to develop technical delivery plans to match technical and product vision, drawing on information from a wide variety of sources, whilst imparting vision and providing support to a number of related delivery work streams.

 

WHAT YOU CAN DO AS AN ENGINEERING MANAGER AT REED EXHIBITIONS

 

You will be responsible for all individual contributors involved in delivering software solutions for our events management platform and overall technical implementation of the platform. Ensuring the platform consists of high quality fault tolerant, reliable and supportable services. The position works closely with engineering peers, product and project leaders/managers, and other in-house teams.

Provide leadership, management, direction, and vision to employees to support, run, and change activities in the software development life cycle. Acting as a servant leader to highly motivated, collaborative, close-nit, enthusiastic cross-functional autonomous teams. 

You will support creating a highly collaborative innovative culture that embraces change and strives to achieve results. Able to coach, motivate and challenge individuals on a 1-2-1 basis, setting goals and ensure individual training plans are developed. Own the technical recruitments, on-boarding and training processes, interfacing with HR. Monitor and report on team management metrics, achieving management targets.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED


• Experienced engineering manager, with direct line-management, supporting individuals in cross functional engineering teams and strong delegation skills.
• Experience leading the technical delivery, with quality and architecture oversight, of several medium to large scale platforms built using micro-service back-ends.
• Advanced problem-solving experience involving leading teams in identifying, researching, and coordinating the resources necessary to effectively troubleshoot/diagnose complex project issues; prior success extracting/translating findings into alternatives/solutions; and identifying risks/impacts and schedule adjustments
• Experience translating and implementing technical strategy in to new process and practices
• Strong organisation/project planning, managing projects of various size and complexity, time management, and change management skills.
• Track record of hiring high performing engineers, supporting professional and skills competency development and coaching them to continuously realise their full potential
• Demonstrable experience of delivering business impacts and measuring the effectiveness of software delivery, software quality and operational excellence.
• Demonstrable experience of building and leading a trusting and vibrant environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame or judgment, placing emphasis problem solving and continuous improvement
• Demonstrable experience implementing technical standards, measuring and managing technical debt
• A Software Engineering background with strong knowledge of modern development practices with at least 1 or more programming languages such as c#, or Java
• Experience employing continuous integration, delivery and testing techniques, instrumenting codebases supporting the evolvability of services and root cause analysis of production issues
• Comprehensive understanding of XP, Scrum/LeSS and/or Lean, DevOps & CALMS cultures
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, presenting information in a concise and effective manner, applicable to a wide audience including senior management


ADVANTAGES


• Management of remote, near/off-shore or consultancy teams.
• Knowledge of modern management theory frameworks, People Operations & the science around people management, using 360 Peer Review, Sentiment Analysis techniques and technical training programmes.
• Experience hosting workshops, coaching 5S, A3, 5 Whys, Kaizen and driving continuous improvements
• Understanding of evolutionary architecture and emergent design advantages and constraints
• Knowledgeable of various test first strategies and Testing patterns such as TDD and BDD but also performance, scalability, security and DR testing
• Knowledgeable of Cloud (preferably AWS and/or Azure), IaC, Immutable & ephemeral Infrastructure, Green-blue deployments, micro-services, event driven architectures, serverless patterns and constraints.
• Experience of Enterprise Content Management Systems such as Adobe AEM, Sitecore, Episerver, Umbracco
• Actively participating in the wider engineering and/or management community.
