Job Title: Network and Unified Communication Engineer 


Reports to: Head of Networks and Unified Communications


Based at: Richmond, UK


Team Structure: No direct reports.



Job Purpose:

The Network and Unified Communication Engineer role will as part of the CIT Networks Team, provide support for the business IT   Network and Unified Communications technologies, in conjunction with the wider CIT Infrastructure Team and other parts of Reed Elsevier (RETS).  


The primary focus of the Network and Unified communication Engineer activities will be both the UK and globally shared Network and communications systems, whilst also collaborating with overseas colleagues as required.


Scope:

The RX Network estate is predominantly Cisco-based with several other vendors represented, particularly, Juniper, McAfee, Palo Alto, in a mixed outsourced, consumed-as-a-service and RX owned/operated model.  As a business RX depends heavily on its communications infrastructure. 


The network engineer will operate within a small team ensuring that the Network and communications systems perform as required to support the business, whilst responding rapidly, decisively and effectively when problems arise.  This will include being on-call one week out of every four to provide home-based telephone and dial-in support out-of-hours, travelling into the office if circumstances require and working outside of office hours where necessary.



Key Responsibilities:


General Duties:

  • Providing support to all areas of the business as required (Operational and Project).
  • Providing support and instruction to the regional hubs on managing network and unified communication technologies as appropriate.
  • Working with the Team as a project resource, working on Service enhancements and Projects. 
  • BAU duties that the company could reasonably expect to be completed in the scope of IT network operations.
  • Working in conjunction with RX vendors including RETS or Third parties as necessary.
  • Ensuring the RX Network estate is appropriately patched and hardened defined standards and best practices, and in compliance with annual RE security audit guidelines.
  • Participate security testing process, and develop and action remediation plans as needed.
  • Documentation of technology solutions and upkeep of process and technical documentation to support said solutions.
  • Day to day firewall management. 
  • Layer 2 and Layer 3 support and administration of enterprise and corporate network environments.
  • Content filter administration and management in line with company usage policy.
  • 2nd & 3rd line support for operational network and communication issues.
  • 3rd line support for all other global regional hubs and satellite sites.
  • On call Network support (Operational and Project).
Deliverables:
  • BAU duties that the company could reasonably expect to be completed in the scope of IT network operations.
  • Definition and on-going update to all system documentation in regards to above services (identification where documentation gaps exist and remediation).
  • Research, define and document the network architecture and high level designs for major RX project initiatives.
  • Contribute to awareness of network strategy and culture.
  • Participate in researching, defining and documenting the network architecture and high level designs for major new initiatives.


Ideal candidate profile:

Technical Skills: 
A strong technical background (ideally with professional qualifications or equivalent industry experience) in the following:
  • Experience of network technologies in medium scale enterprise environments.
  • Proven experience designing and developing network standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety network solutions, standards and protocols.
  • Required 
    • Strong knowledge of industry standard network systems.
    • LAN Switches(Cisco 2960, 3850, 6500’s, 4500’s ,Sup 720’s, Nexus etc).
    • WAN (Cisco, MPLS, OSPF, BGP).
    • Unified Communication Systems – Cisco CUCM , CUC , Jabber clients, QoS).
    • Working knowledge of Scripting Languages, (ideally Python or Perl).
  • Desired
    • Security; Firewalls (Checkpoint, Palo Alto, Cisco ASA).
    • DNS/DHCP/IPAM.
    • IPS (McAfee).

Personal Skills:
  • Strong Service orientated Mind-set with a focus on the customer.
  • Proven network engineering experience.
  • Well-developed  communications skills at all levels both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Team Player.
  • Driven and self-motivated.
  • Willingness to learn.
