The Environmental Sciences Journals group publishes more than 170 high-quality journals, including key publications edited by the best minds in the subject areas as well as some of the fastest growing journals in Elsevier.


About the role:


We are looking for a bright, entrepreneurial, and enthusiastic person to join the Environmental Sciences Journals group as Associate Publisher. You will be responsible for maintaining, improving an expanding a high-growth and high-impact portfolio of journals and related products in the field of Environment and Technology. This team is part of the STMJ Physical Sciences (PS) group. 

As Associate Publisher, you will develop the strategy, help develop goals and monitor the progress within your portfolio of 11 high-profile journal titles, including some Open Access journals. You will also contribute to translating STMJ publishing strategy into a general environment strategy and support the team creating new opportunities for growth (content, revenue, quality, etc.) and, where appropriate, development of new publishing models. Within the context of current developments and challenges in the academic publishing landscape, the role requires a specific focus on evaluating, implementing and executing suitable strategy around Content Development, Open Access publishing and new product development. A proactive attitude, an eye for opportunities and a natural ability to negotiate toward a successful outcome within a given situation, are fundamental. 


We are looking to recruit a full-time Associate Publisher to work at our main office in Amsterdam reporting to a Publishing Director. You will work within a team of 10 other Publishers located in Europe, UK, China and the USA. Please note you must already have a permit to work in the Netherlands.


Key Result Areas 

Strategy and business plans   

  • Translate the strategic direction, seize and create opportunities in an environment of changing access models and customer needs.  

  • Strong entrepreneurial approach with ability to translate the opportunities for growth into concrete products and revenues. This includes developing ideas for new journals, preparing proposals, launching the new journals and working to bring them to self-sustaining growth. 

Portfolio Management and Development

  • Work with editors, authors, editorial boards and the academic community at large to ensure sufficient copy flow of relevant, high quality manuscripts.
  • Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors.
  • Continuous and pro-active maintenance of the existing portfolio, matching developments in the external marketplace, including the development of Open Access initiatives.
  • Continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day editorial, production and publishing operations and actively address improvements where required. 
  • Meet portfolio related objectives with regards to content growth, articles market share, citation share, relative impact factor, editorial speeds and author and editor satisfaction.
  • Manage the editorial fees budget and provide input to pricing processes.

Relationship Management and Networking

  • Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts and networks with key external stakeholders, including editors, authors, society representatives, university leadership and industry, with a view to understanding their professional and organizational needs and ongoing market developments.
  • Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts with key stakeholders within the company, including editorial, production, publishing, marketing and technology teams, coordinating activities as they relate to the portfolio’s needs and development. 

Business Development


  • Develop new products and services, including society journals and conferences.

Educational level and experience:

  • University degree - essential
  • Minimum of 3 years journal publishing experience – desirable
  • Fluent English speaker – essential
