Vice President, Strategy and Operations

The Vice President of Strategy and Operations will lead the strategy cycle and provide high quality, timely analysis and informed recommendations on strategy, M&A activity, growth and expansion of new markets, and new innovations.  In addition this individual will lead programs to improve the efficiency of the North America Research Solutions (NARS) business.  This individual will be responsible for Identifying and pursuing opportunities across the business where continuous improvement methodologies can be applied to improve process flow and effectiveness, and eliminate redundant or unnecessary processes. The role requires exceptional analytical and advisory skills, commercial thinking, corporate M&A skills, the ability to plan, manage and deliver projects independently, excellent communication/influencing skills and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships within a diverse, virtual team operating in a matrix environment.


Primary areas of focus will include:


Overall Strategic / Business Planning Cycle

  1. Provides thought leadership and strategic and operational support to drive revenue growth for the North America Research Solutions business.
  2. Working closely with the key senior leaders to develop a long-term vision for our business and successfully deliver projects critical to short and long-term growth to include:  Development of go-to-market plan for sales; Development of a content and market (geography) strategy; Development of a pricing strategy, territory modeling and go to market rules for the sales team; Development of sales incentive compensation schemes.
  3. Delivers the strategy cycle and annual operating plan process including overall strategy and quarterly business reviews.
  4. Provide clear direction and insight in the ongoing development of strategy cycle ensuring accurate and timely information gathering and tracking of performance metrics to support business decision making.
  5. Develop analysis tools and advisory services to obtain and utilize economic, market, competitive, and regulatory data.
  6. Identify business opportunities of tomorrow.

Business Unit Strategic Planning

  1. Demonstrates effective use of emotional intelligence to best partner with the segment teams and functional business units for outcomes which are mutually beneficial, balancing competing priorities within a matrix organization.
  2. Assist business units in developing its strategy in line with overall business goals and support the development of strategy within that business unit, while engaging with cross-functional stakeholders, to provide high quality, timely analysis and informed recommendations.
  3. Design, guide, recommend, and implement entry into new markets, segments, and distribution channels.
  4. Collaborate with Business Unit Leaders and cross-functional stakeholders to identify innovative service and product offerings that will enhance the business’s leadership position in the marketplace.
  5. Collaborate with Business Unit Leaders to identify improved business processes to drive efficiency and improvements.
  6. Lead strategic support to development of product in terms of pricing strategy, assessing market trends/developments.

Driving process improvement

  1. Identify organization alignment opportunities:  Assessing areas of potential overlap between NARS and global functional teams and recommending streamlined organization structures and workflows.
  2. Expand the business’ offshoring capabilities:  Partnering with NARS leadership in the identification and implementation of work product / processes in the RELX Philippines Shared Services Center.
  3. Establish metrics:  Developing a set of metrics to track the operational effectiveness of the business and progress against key targets.
  4. Drive change using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies and providing process and organizational analysis, design and improvement services to the business. 
  5. Build Lean and Six Sigma capabilities across the organization – both by training, mentoring and coaching select staff and by rolling-out training programs to a broader audience.





  1. MBA or equivalent education and experience
  2. Preferred experience in a leadership role of training and education of an organization on Lean, Six Sigma and continuous improvement capabilities
  3. Professional qualification in relevant area – e.g law, finance, economics.  Knowledge of information industry and technology preferred
  4. 3 years working in a strategic consulting firm is preferred
  5. 2-5 years working in a corporate organization
  6. Proven ability to define, lead and implement critical strategic initiatives in a complex B2B matrix organization, marrying quantitative and qualitative analysis and driving business results against recommendations
  7. Strong analytical savvy, problem-solving sophistication and a drive to make the highest possible impact
  8. Demonstrated exceptional thought leadership capability
  9. Outstanding executive presence and influencing skills
  10. Strong application of Emotional Intelligence – demonstrates self-awareness, awareness of others in working approach, collaborating within a matrix environment
  11. Gravitas and communication abilities to represent the business with senior stakeholders externally and internally, while maintaining an ability to talk in clear and compelling terms about strategic plans
  12. Hands-on style and ability to get involved in the detail
  13. Proven ability to work to tight deadlines and under pressure
  14. Experience with change management techniques
  15. Must be willing to travel 10-20% of the time
