We’re building an intelligent system that links scientists to grants quickly to help them spend more time in research, and less in administration -  and need more help. If you’re a passionate, focused and driven development manager who has a bias for action, isn’t afraid of putting your teams first, makes good decisions quickly, likes building things you’ve not built before, untangling legacy code issues and ensuring your sprint commitments are met, we want to hear from you. In return we offer the opportunity to lead teams working on a suite of products built using  a range of technologies - Java/Scala AWS microservice architecture environment and modern Node.js based Javascript, as well as the .Net family of technologies.
 
More about the role:
 
This is an exciting opportunity to develop software using the best techniques available in a fast-moving product-centric environment. This new role will be a key part of a cross-functional product development group using agile management and engineering practices. You will provide personal, delivery and technical leadership to your teams of developers, automation QAs, business analysts and user experience designers. The role may work also with 3rd party software delivery suppliers to deliver discrete product pieces if required.

The Engineering Manager will be working to build an environment focused on encouraging creativity and collaboration.
 
Experience required:
 
The ideal candidate should be an experienced Software Development Manager or managerial Team lead with the following areas of expertise
 
  • Servant-leader line management of software engineers, team building, hiring and career guidance   
  • Skilled in building great relationships with Product, business teams and customers.
  • A positive, constructive approach with an emphasis on collaboration and flexibility
  • A passion for all aspects of software development from design through refining
  • Agile Scrum, ideally you are a Certified Scrum Master and have led all the standard Scrum ceremonies
  • Experience of leading teams in building RESTful micro services using Spring Boot or similar.
  • Coding experience with Java 7 or 8
  • Leading JavaScript developers using a major framework, preferably ReactJS and Node.js
  • Familiarity with front and back end automation testing
  • Continuous integration, ideally continuous deployment
  • AWS development/deployment experience or similar cloud based platforms
  • Build Automation experience using common Java Build tools
  • Use of git source control
  • Architect-level understanding of multi-tier web applications and services
     
    Desirable
     
  • Knowledge of Scala and Docker
  • Lean software development
  • Experience leading Business Analysts and User Experience designers
  • An interest in research, science, and working with the research community
  • Big data and machine learning
  • Liaising with offshore and/or outsourced development teams
  • Experience influencing product roadmaps
