The Commercial Director, Oncology has a critically important role in driving the commercial success for Elsevier’s clinical solutions for oncology.  Elsevier is a leader in advanced clinical decision support for oncologists. Our solutions are used by over 2,500 oncologists to improve cancer care. Elsevier’s Clinical Solutions unit considers oncology a very important growth area and is investing significantly in expanding solutions to better serve oncologists, oncology nurses, payers and life science companies and help them improve outcomes. 

 

This is an exciting new role critically important for driving growth and innovation. The Director is a key member of the commercial team and works very closely with other functional team such as sales, product, content, and informatics focused on our oncology solutions. Team members are largely based in our Pittsburgh office. This role will report directly to the Commercial VP, Oncology, and is based in Pittsburgh (with Philadelphia as an alternative that would require significant travel to Pittsburgh).


Responsibilities

 

This role has a deep understanding of our customers and partners, and the outcomes they want to achieve. It is primarily responsible for delivering the new sales and earned revenue goals for the oncology portfolio through sales into the target segments. The main commercial responsibilities are:

  1. Define segment-based commercial strategies
  2. Drive execution of go-to-market strategies
  3. Foster customer and other industry-participant relationships

 

Define segment-based commercial strategies

  • Drive segment strategy and execution with VP and other team members
  • Develop customer segmentation and segment prioritization
  • Participate in and lead customer discussions to define segment-specific customer needs and value proposition; obtain additional insights from sales, customer engagement, and marketing
  • Collaborate with product, informatics, content, and technology in developing product value
  • Refine partner and channel strategy for go-to-market (including identification of partners)

Drive execution of go-to-market strategies

  • Closely work with marketing, sales, account management, and customer engagement teams to define execution plans for go-to-market strategies, and ensure successful execution
  • Drive use of customer insights data and analytics in sales and services execution
  • Jointly work with sales leadership to develop account strategy and support sales teams in sales execution; develop strong customer relationships
  • Support international commercial efforts
  • Work with channel and strategic partners to drive execution of commercial strategy, actively support key relationships

Foster customer and other industry-participant relationships

  • Understanding customer an industry-participants clinical priorities and competitive pressures
  • Support account management and implementation teams in delivering timely implementation and strong relationships with customers
  • Discovery and communicate unmet customer needs to relevant other teams
  • Participate in industry events

We are looking for a very accomplished commercial director who can significantly accelerate our success and help motivate the team. Important characteristics include:

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a matrixed environment and be able to lead through demonstration of a strong work ethic and commitment and understanding of, the industry and the needs of our customers
  • Highly-motivated self-starter who is relentlessly results driven
  • Proven track record of commercial success in areas such as sales, business development, product marketing / product commercial roles
  • In-depth understanding of U.S. healthcare industry and oncology trends
  • Experience in successfully leading discussions with decision makers
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and drive commercial success
  • 7+ years professional experience, with strong background in healthcare
  • Advanced degree a plus

 

Upon acceptance of this role, the selected internal candidate will be required to sign a Restrictive Covenants Agreement which includes Non-Solicitation, Non-Disclosure and for certain roles a Non-Competition Agreement as a condition of placement into the role.
