About the role

We're looking to hire a thoughtful, precise designer who is comfortable working with product, developer and quality assurance teams and can communicate clearly and efficiently.  This person will shape, drive and influence the UX direction of a multifaceted application.  You will truly be able to flex your creative muscles as you work collaboratively with our product and development team. 


 About what you will do

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Work in a team with a product owner and developers to design, deliver to production, and optimize features that meet the needs of the scientific publishing community bringing forward UX principles and best practices to make design decisions.
  • Build positive working relationships with all members of the team.
  • Create living prototypes used to communicate internally and externally.
  • Clearly present pros/cons of your design concepts to Senior Management for approval.
  • Work with product managers, quality engineers and developers to ensure designs meet user needs and deliver business and strategic goals.
  • Ensure accessibility and browser compatibility.
  • Actively work on improving the UX design process and the quality of UX deliverables.
  • Champion users throughout the design process. Develop a deep understanding of the needs and workflows of Authors, Reviewers and Editors. Build empathy for users across the organization.
  • Build out and maintain style guide for product interfaces.
  • In order to be deemed viable for this uniquely creative role you must possess current UX design experience, passion and creativity.

  • Has great graphic design and interaction design skills.

  • Can present ideas at the right fidelity and the right way for different audiences.

  • Loves making the complex feel simple.
  • Can work systematically to produce high-quality deliverables.

  • Can think big picture and also cover the small details that developers need.

  • Can work independently and collaboratively as needed.


And meet the following requirements:

  • At least three years design experience and a broad UX skillset covering an understanding of user research, and strong skills in user experience and user interface design.

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating experience of creating products and services that meet user needs, product requirements and business goals.

  • Hands-on experience in usability testing.
  • The ability to rationalize your design solutions for product owners, developers, and other designers, and also to be a user advocate to business and technology stakeholders throughout the organization.

  • Good working knowledge of UX prototyping tools.
  • Good working knowledge of current UI concepts and underlying structures.

  • Experience of working with different products, teams and stakeholders would be beneficial.

  • Ability to prototype concepts, and to participate in validating them through usability testing or other appropriate methods.

  • A good understanding of usability and accessibility principles.

  • Relevant degree is a positive addition but not compulsory
  • Prior experience of working with academics or researchers would be a bonus.
