Undergraduate Technology Industrial Placement – 12 months – Cardiff

This paid industrial placement is suited to undergraduate students who wish to complete a year in industry (aka sandwich placement) after the second year of their degree and will last for 12 months.

LexisNexis Risk Solutions is excited to be seeking a Software Engineering placement candidate with foundational knowledge of PHP (or a similar, transferable language) to join our Cardiff based development team for 12 months, starting July 2020. 

The goal of the placement is to develop the knowledge and technical skills of the intern so that they are able to contribute to real feature development as part of an agile software development team. During the placement, they will also gain valuable business insight that will help them develop into a well-rounded development team member.

Opportunities and Responsibilities

We will help you learn how to use our big data platform - HPCC - through a combination of training courses, self-learning and peer support

We will introduce you into a development team’s processes and prepare you to become a regular contributor as part of the team delivering exciting features to market

Gradually, with support, you will be…

Contributing to the design of new features and solutions

Developing and delivering features across the full stack (including use of modern PHP frameworks, front-end frameworks, HPCC and other tools)

Contributing to the quality assurance effort, including use of test automation tools (such as Cucumber) and Continuous Integration tools (such as Jenkins/GitLab)

Contributing as a member of our cross-functional agile product development teams

Working closely with the product owner and project management to deliver products and enhancements to market

Essential Skills

Passionate collaborator with a focus on what is best for the team

Enthusiastic and capable technologist, able to demonstrate a broad technical knowledge 

Foundational/basic PHP development skills

Understanding of agile development concepts

Able to work with relational databases such as MySQL at a basic level (eg query, update and delete data)

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Clear focus on the customer, both internal and external

Desirable Skills

Basic Linux skills via the command line 

An interest in modern software development, including Docker and Continuous Delivery

Active participation in the development community

Experience of PHP frameworks such as Laravel, Lumen or Zend

Experience of front-end frameworks such as VueJS or React
