Systems Engineer II – Linux– Cardiff


LexisNexis Risk Solutions is seeking a capable Systems Engineer possessing a talent for working with a ‘DevOps’ mentality. Our teams are collaborative and forward thinking; the successful candidate will assist with the operation and support for critical Linux based applications, customers and projects, working closely with Development, QA, IT Operations and Customer Operations teams.  You will utilize your excellent communication, problem solving skills and work in a fast-paced environment.

Main Responsibilities:

Assist with the delivery of resilient application stacks via "Infrastructure as Code" concepts, using Cloud Native tools.

Deployment of applications and configuration changes within production and other lifecycles.

Monitoring and on-going support of critical, high revenue business applications.

Diagnosis and resolution of system and application issues.

Work with diverse technical and non-technical teams including Development, QA, IT Operations, Customer Operations and Product teams.

Write and update systems / application documentation.

This position requires On-Call rotation for off peak hours.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

Passionate collaborator with a focus on what is best for the team (both immediate and the wider group)

Strong and enthusiastic technologist, able to demonstrate a broad technical knowledge 

DevOps concepts such as "Infrastructure as Code" using orchestration tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef or equivalents.

Experience of working within the public cloud, specifically AWS and associated technologies, e.g. – S3, EC2, auto-scaling, VPCs, RDS, etc.

2+ years’ system administration of Linux (e.g. – CentOS / RedHat, Ubuntu).

Hands-on experience and support / troubleshooting skills emphasising on the following server stack components: Apache, Tomcat, PHP.

System and application monitoring experience – e.g. Nagios, Cloudwatch, Grafana, etc.

Scripting in languages such as Bash, PHP, Perl, Python, PowerShell.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Clear focus on the customer, both internal and external.

Desirable Skills:

Continuous Integration / Source Control, such as GitHub, Jenkins.

Experience of working with Microsoft technologies, Windows Servers, IIS, .Net Framework.

Experience working with an enterprise RDBMS such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server.

Knowledge of change control and associated procedures.

Experience of containerised workloads, using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, KOPS.

Log Management – Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana).

Experience of working with Microsoft technologies, Windows Servers, IIS, .Net Framework.

Knowledge and experience of working with private clouds, e.g. – OpenStack, VMWare, Hyper-V or equivalents.

Good knowledge of enterprise level networking and concepts (TCP/IP, VPNs, Firewalls).

Knowledge of Agile software methodologies, particularly DevOps


BSc Computer Science or relevant experience.

Proven background working in a technical, IT related position
