Our Elsevier Strategy team is currently looking for two enthusiastic Strategy Managers to join the team; one as our Manager, Corporate Strategy and one as our Manager, Research Strategy.

 

As a Strategy Manager you will provide leadership and outstanding problem solving capabilities to address a broad range of strategic projects critical to the success of Elsevier. This includes providing insight and direction in evaluating new business opportunities; exploring potential innovations in products and business models; reviewing acquisitions, divestitures and strategic alliances; and preparing strategic reports, recommendations and presentations. 

 

You will work closely with the Presidents/Managing Directors of relevant business units and their respective senior management teams.  You will also have broad exposure to the business units as well as business leaders throughout the global organization. 

 

The Manager, Corporate Strategy reports to the EVP, Corporate Strategy who you will also support with ad hoc requests. The Manager, Research Strategy will report to the Director of Research Strategy.


You will be based in our Elsevier Headquarter office in Amsterdam.

Your responsibilities

  • Lead and drive to conclusion critical strategic analyses to support top priority strategic issues impacting the business, working  directly with content, product, functional and commercial teams, in such areas as:
    • Accelerated segment-specific growth strategies
    • New product/offering development
    • Pricing and new business models
    • Acquisitions candidate screening
  • Contribute to the Elsevier strategic planning processes:
    • Work closely with business units to drive the understanding of changing user and customer needs and competitor developments
    • Work closely with business unit leaders to develop and implement their strategic and operational plans
    • Prepare strategy presentations for senior leaders, including the Elsevier CEO
    • Initiate strategic deep-dives on new market and product developments
  • Review and provide strategic recommendations regarding potential acquisitions and strategic alliances:
    • Contribute to business development deal discussions, negotiations, and due diligence
    • Direct strategic product development efforts including market opportunity assessment, financial forecasting, analysis and modeling, and implementation planning

What you should bring

  • University degree/MBA
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience, preferably a combined background of experience with a major strategy consulting firm followed by strategy experience in a corporate environment (technology, cloud, equity research in investment banking industry e.g).
  • Ability to understand implications for Elsevier’s business and to develop recommendations based on research findings
  • Ability to engage with and influence senior leaders within Elsevier
  • Exceptional problem solving skills, e.g., able to structure difficult/ambiguous problems and suggest pragmatic ways to solve them. Creative and persistent in approach to research and analysis, e.g. is willing to innovate and suggest multiple approaches in solving a single problem
  • Exceptional quantitative skills, e.g., ability to perform statistical analyses of complex data files
  • Excellent leadership skills, e.g. ability to manage and motivate teams to deliver top quality results under tight deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to synthesize findings clearly to present to Elsevier’s executive team via exhibits and text summaries
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, energetic and self-sufficient
  • Must be able to travel but the position is 70% location based
  • Fluent in English
