The Senior Illustrator is responsible for the illustrative print and online content appearing in the front section of Cell, covers of Trends and sister journals, and special commercial products. The SI maintains and evolves a consistent illustration style for Cell’s Leading Edge, introduces new technologies and workflows, innovates in print and digital media, and manages deadlines and timelines related to the flagship journal. 

This role investigates and implements new types of illustrative and multimedia content that could appear in Cell Press journals and homepages and also works directly with suppliers to investigate, implement, and manage additional protocols to extend the reach of the illustration program. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conceptualize and create illustrations from authors’ rough sketches or electronic files.
Create ideas for illustrations where the author of an article has not provided suggestions.
Produce posters, covers, graphics, SnapShots, and other special content.
Assist with management of freelance illustration model.
Perform quality control on freelanced art and design work. 
Research and license photographic images where appropriate.
Liaise with Cell editors, authors, and suppliers. 
Attend outside seminars and lecture on industry trends.
Stay tuned to web and design innovations on competing journals.
Think creatively about new ideas and features.

 

SKILLS:
Bachelor's or master's degree in fine arts, visual art, graphic design and illustration, or related field preferred
High proficiency in digital illustration software Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
Proficiency in Adobe inDesign
Abilities in other relevant creative software a plus
Portfolio demonstrating high proficiency in illustration and design software
3-5 years of illustration and design-related work experience 
Strong visualization skills to transform complex information into 2- or 3D images
Good understanding of science to be able to conceptualize scientific ideas
Detail oriented, quality driven, thorough, accurate
Strong organizational skills with correspondingly strong follow-up ability
Strong communication skills, verbal & written
Effective interpersonal skills 
Ability to handle a multitude of tasks
