Site Reliability Engineer (Cirium)

Portland, OR

Cirium (formerly known as FlightGlobal) is looking for a skilled Site Reliability Engineer. This position combines software development skills with operational knowledge to build a new cloud-native platform for scaling our global data and analytics applications. You will be to be part of a growing team of engineers working to create this platform, which will support the real-time data processing and advanced analytics products being built by dozens of engineers and data scientists.

An SRE at Cirium is certainly not a one-trick pony! Part DevOps engineer, part system administrator, part software engineer, you’ll be responsible for the infrastructure, monitoring, CI/CD pipelines, and general uptime and availability for all applications owned by the Data Acquisition team. The SRE role is embedded within the cross-functional Product Development team and, together with the Developers, QA Engineers and Product Owners, you’ll have the opportunity to design systems and solutions that best support the needs of your team. While the SRE functionally operates within the product team, the role reports into the SRE Manager and is part of a tight-knit group of SREs that thrive on helping each other solve problems and contributing to standards and best practices.

The Data Acquisition team brings in status information about flights as they happen, all over the world – so the data is global, real-time and high volume. The team manages flight status data from over 700 sources coming in through various delivery mechanisms and in a variety of formats and the team’s job is to standardize the data and make it easily available to all other Cirium teams. Scalability and stability are key to the Data Acquisition portfolio and we leverage several native AWS services, as well as Docker and Kubernetes to support our large service footprint.

This is an exciting time at Cirium as we are beginning to leverage data sets from different parts of the business, fusing them together to form interesting, new data sets, and ultimately creating products that are unique and incredibly valuable to our customers. As an SRE, you’ll have the opportunity to make real impact to both your immediate team and the larger SRE community within Cirium.

The position participates in the design, construction, and operation of our system, network, and application infrastructure.

Responsibilities Include:

·      Resolve complex technical issues as necessary

·      Manage and encourage new ideas from staff to foster improvements and innovation

·       Participate in on-call rotations

·      Intermediate to advanced knowledge of AWS services and the ability to architect scalable, cloud-native applications

·      Experience designing systems that are optimized for throughput, scale and low latency

·      Working knowledge of data systems and design

·      BS Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent work experience

Other Technical Skills:

·      Working knowledge of utilizing REST APIs
·      Linux server administration

·      Intermediate to advanced knowledge of at least one high-level scripting language, such as Ruby, Python, or Go

·      Intermediate to advanced knowledge of configuration management tools, such as puppet, ansible, salt, etc...

·      Thorough understanding of major system components used in system administration (i.e., storage systems, Linux kernel, TCP/IP, etc.).

·      Working knowledge of best practices for Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment

·      Ability to clearly explain (written, and orally) technical issues to a non-technical audience
