About Mendeley

Mendeley’s mission is to revolutionise how research is done in science, technology and medicine. Our productivity and collaboration tools are well loved and used by over 6 million scientists and researchers around the globe.

After 8 years of amazing growth, we are looking to ensure we can serve even more researchers in the future, and provide even better functionality using the wealth of data and analytics that Elsevier - our parent company - has available.

What’s in it for you

  • Help advance science, solve real-world problems, and work with fascinating users.
  • Be part of an innovative design culture, and have the time and space to work on all aspects of the UCD process.
  • Have the freedom and flexibility to do whatever is needed to solve design challenges.
  • Work on strategically important design-led projects
  • Grow as a designer by working with our multi-skilled team. We will also send you to conferences and training

To get some insight into what it is like to be part of the design team at Mendeley, read about how we designed our experience principles, and how we incorporate user research into our product design process.

Design at Mendeley

You will be an integral part of the design team at Mendeley, which has gone through an exponential growth in the past 3 years. We are a tight-knit team of 11 designers, operating in a flat structure where you will report directly to the Head of Design.

We champion the best UCD and product development practices. This includes thorough research using a variety of methods including field observations, weekly usability testing sessions with users, and A/B testing experiments. We hope you can help us scale and improve our practices even further.

What you’ll be doing:

We are creating a new generation of productivity tools for researchers. This is a top priority for our business and you will be a key member of the team doing the research and design work to help us achieve our ambitious goals.

Your work will be a mix of user interviews and testing, concept design, and detailed UX and interaction design. Through research you will fully understand how science researchers work and design products to meet their needs.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Own and carry out all design work on one of the major products areas of the Mendeley reference manager.
  • Work in an agile team with a product owner, BA, and developers to design, deliver to production, and optimise products that meet the needs of the science research community. Build positive working relationships with all members of the team.
  • Ensure that the products you design meet user needs, are aligned with wider product and business goals, and are in line with our front-end and back-end technologies.
  • Work closely with other designers in a small team to ensure design consistency across the wider product.
  • Champion users throughout the design process. Develop a deep understanding of the needs and workflows of science researchers through interviews and other research methods. Build empathy for users across the organisation.
  • Use the full range of design methods to deliver the best possible experiences for our users. In addition to those listed above, this may include scamping, creating experience maps, wireframing, prototyping, running workshops, sharing user insights with wider stakeholders, collaborating with other designers etc.
  • Proactively improve how the Mendeley design team works by exploring new tools, methods, and processes.
  • Mentor and coach other designers as needed.
  • Help transform Mendeley into a design-led organisation.

What you should bring:

  • At least five-years design experience and broad UX skillset covering user research, user experience, and user interface design
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating experience of creating products and services that meet user needs, product requirements, and business goals.
  • Hands-on experience in a wide range of research methods including interviews and surveys. Experience of usability testing.
  • The ability to understand user needs, think strategically about business opportunities for Elsevier, and develop designs that successfully marry the two.
  • The ability to rationalise your design solutions for product owners, developers, and other designers, and also to be a user advocate to business and technology stakeholders throughout the organisation.
  • Experience working in an agile environment with product owners, business analysts and developers.
  • The desire to collaborate with other designers to continuously improve our design practices and products.
  • Good working knowledge of Sketch, InVision, and UX prototyping tools.
  • Experience of working in a large organisation with different products, teams and stakeholders would be beneficial.
  • Prior experience of working with academics or researchers would be a bonus.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • 25 days holiday + 8 standard Bank Holidays
  • Bike loan scheme, indoor bike storage, and in-house showers
  • Childcare vouchers
  • £2k employee referral fee
  • Monthly team events and Friday Beer O’Clock
  • Regular Technology Hack Days
  • Conference attendance and training
  • Great Central London location in the heart of the start-up community with a large variety of local lunch options
