Senior Software Engineer (Java, Spring Boot, Cloud, Microservices)

Elsevier Education Technology is developing a next generation e-learning product suite which will transform healthcare education. The first of its kind for nursing education, we use big data, machine learning technology, analytics and adaptive techniques to track students’ interactions with content, assessments and simulations while providing a highly focused, engaging and personalized learning path for each student.


Reporting to the Manager, Software Engineering and working closely with the Lead Software Engineer we now require a talented, Senior Software Engineer to work in mixed (technical, design, testing, business etc.) development squads/teams of 3-5 people in this innovative teaching and learning environment specifically focused on Clinical Key and MedEd Test.


The successful candidate will work within the squad model focused on new feature development / product delivery and quality. Each Squad has full autonomy regarding how it goes about delivering its long and short-term goals, ensuring both alignment and autonomy. In addition, we will look to the Senior Software Engineer to suggest simple, maintainable product and project features which meet/anticipate customer needs.  


This is a high-profile project within Elsevier and the successful applicants contribution will ultimately be transformative to the business.

Preferred experience and technology requirements:


Must haves: 

  • Recent career history operating as a senior Software Engineer or similar to show strong evidence of developing microservice based platforms
  • Strong hands-on Agile cloud microservice development experience (5+ years) to include experience across languages and projects with experience in Java and Spring Boot
  • Familiarity with event driven architectures
  • Demonstrable experience of developing RESTful and other API architectures 
  • Experience developing devops functionalities and working with containerization
  • Experience of successful project/product completion and delivery, ideally involving simultaneous projects) 

Nice to haves: 

  • A background in Educational technology and/or healthcare and nursing is a plus
  • Open source or community experience is a plus.
