The Role

We are seeking a talented and self-motivated Quality Engineer with experience of web application testing. You will be joining a fast-growing agile team in our London office to help deliver a high volume, high availability and high performance web site.  This is an exciting opportunity to play a role in changing the way that web products are delivered within the company, devising and implementing a modern approach to software engineering that enables continuous delivery and releases features on-demand.  You will be part of a cross-functional product development group using agile management and engineering practices.

The Project

ScienceDirect is the world's leading collection of science information on the web and Elsevier's flagship product.  A project has just been completed to replace the web site from the ground up with a brand new, cutting edge technology platform that is fast and reliable and enables continuous delivery so that the product team can test new ideas, be more innovative and respond more quickly to rapidly changing customer needs. We are now looking to integrate this amazing new Platform with other Elsevier Products to give researchers a single platform they can access which offers a seamless experience to succeed in their work with less time and effort, focusing on researcher success.

Key Tasks

  • Work as part of a highly collaborative, cross-functional, agile product development team to QE a new responsive web application from the ground up
  • Support Product Managers and teams by analysing requirements and identifying acceptance criteria for agile user stories
  • Ensure the scope of testing is appropriate for each feature and that testing is carried out effectively, using a combination of automated and manual testing throughout the team
  • Exploratory testing to uncover issues that are not obvious
  • Work with developers / automated test specialists to ensure appropriate automated test coverage and eventually being self-sufficient to write code independently
  • Work with Product Managers and Developers to ensure the software is high quality and meets user requirements
  • Produce any necessary documentation, for example acceptance criteria on stories, logging defects and knowledge share documentation
  • Help to guide the overall development process in order to improve quality and flow of work 
  • Supporting and investigating Production Issues & Incidents

Skills / Experience

  • Experience in testing web applications in a fast-moving and agile environment
  • Experience of API testing using tools such as Postman
  • Agile experience with Scrum/Kanban/XP
  • Writing user stories and acceptance criteria / analysing requirements
  • Working experience with Selenium/Cucumber with the ability to develop automated Scenarios
  • Experience using test / project management / wiki tools such as JIRA / Confluence
  • Experience testing web applications and multiple browsers  
  • Experience with Monitoring and Alerting tools such as Kibana, Hosted Graphite, Sentry etc
  • Experience in production issue debugging / Investigation and assuming a Support Role as and when needed
  • A positive, constructive approach with an emphasis on collaboration and good execution
  • Keenness to learn new technical skills
  • Clear and Concise communication skills with a ‘holistic’ view
  • Gives strong importance to reacting fast to situations
