Purpose of the Job

EClinicalMedicine is a new Open Access journal within The Lancet Group, publishing quality clinical and public health research.

 

EClinicalMedicine is seeking a full-time scientific editor to join the editorial team in London, UK. As an editor on EClinicalMedicine, this role will be responsible for assessing submitted research papers, selecting and collaborating with referees, communicating with authors, liaising with Lancet editorial colleagues, soliciting impactful articles within the scientific scope of the journal, also contributing to the commissioning and editing of commentaries and reviews, and writing editorials and other copy as required. The job entails regular travel to scientific conferences and research institutions worldwide where this role will directly engage with the scientific community. 

 

Main Activities and Responsibilities

Article commissioning and review

  • Organising peer review of articles and other written material, collaborating and communicating with authors.
  • Commissioning review articles and other material for the journal. Soliciting research content, and assisting with maintenance of a strong cascade from Lancet journals.

 

Collaboration with specialty community

  • Attendance of conferences and other events, to represent the journal, to identify suitable topics and authors, and to keep up to date with current developments.
  • Developing and maintaining links with the international translational medicine community,  scanning the current literature to aid in the identification of suitable material, authors, and peer reviewers for the journal.

 

Editorial writing and editing 

  • Writing editorials, news items, and other material for the journal or website as needed.
  • Sub-editing/proof-reading material from all sections of the journal to improve clarity of expression, and to conform to journal style, and the limits of the space available.
  • Checking galley proofs and cross- reading journal pages, both as paper copies and on screen.

 

Strategy and journal development

  • Participate with online strategies, social media activities, and marketing initiatives.
  • Suggesting and helping to develop new initiatives for the further development of the journal.

 

Ad hoc duties

  • Liaising with Lancet editors.
  • Assisting with journal activities as required.
  • Such other duties as may be necessary from time to time.

 

Functional and Technical Competencies

  • Sound general knowledge and broad medical knowledge with clinical experience.
  • Research or editorial experience desirable.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Works well in diverse team setting.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements)

  • PhD (in a biomedically relevant subject) or Masters degree (with relevant clinical experience) required.
  • Broad interest in biomedical sciences, with a sophisticated understanding of the principles.
  • Ability to think critically about a wide range of scientific issues.
  • Ability to participate in team decisions and planning.
  • Organisational and planning skills to ensure deadlines are met and continuous improvement of processes is achieved.
  • Ability to communicate with authors and reviewers, who are experts in their fields, with authority and confidence, demonstrating broad and in-depth clinical and scientific knowledge.
