This role leads the Accounting function for Risk and Business Analytics in the US and is responsible for accurate and timely financial reporting, developing and ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures.  They will need to work closely with their UK counterpart and the Global Compliance and Controls Director to ensure a robust control framework is in place and fully operational.  Jointly with the UK Head of Accounting they will need to deliver a transformation of the combined team to move from a structure solely supporting the Risk business to one that maximizes opportunity across RBA for efficient and effective delivery of accounting processes.

The role will need to be the voice of the RBA Accounting and compliance team on the ground in the US and will have significant exposure to senior management from within Finance and across RBA.  They will need to lead, drive and motivate the US Accounting team through a significant period of change and focus on continuous opportunities for improvement across the Global RBA Accounting and Compliance team.  It will report to the VP Accounting & Compliance RBA and will play a critical role in the leadership of the global team.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Lead the monthly Record-to-Report process for their area of responsibility.  Responsible for accurate and timely financial reporting, including, as appropriate, REQIS validation and submissions, statutory/tax reporting, cash flow and ROIC
  • Provide appropriate technical accounting guidance to the organization, including revenue recognition and execution of any new accounting standards
  • Responsible for adherence to all accounting policies and maintaining accurate and clear balance sheet position including all control activities associated with delivering this.
  • Key point of contact for external auditors
  • Key point of contact for liaison with RELX central teams and supporting any RELX initiatives relevant to areas of responsibility
  • Lead the team to deliver continuous improvement.  This will include review and realignment of Shared Services operations and REPH
  • Provide leadership to the individual members of the team to drive their personal development.
Functional and Technical Competencies
  • Strong technical knowledge of accounting policies and procedures and their alignment with current accounting standards
  • Understanding of current legislative/taxation requirements and awareness of future developments
  • Strong commercial acumen, with ability to apply technical knowledge in a commercial sensitive solution
  • Ability to understand, set and influence strategic plans and visions for the team, to identify risks and opportunities
  • Thorough understanding of advanced financial analysis
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements)
  • 15+ years experience of which 5+ are in a management role
  • Masters level education or equivalent experience required with professional certification (CMA, CFA or CPA)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Ability to negotiate and influence key financial and non-financial executives
  • Must be comfortable to challenge status quo and have a passion for driving change in order to deliver a higher quality output
  • Extensive business acumen, executive presence and influential leadership capabilities.
