You are a very talented senior data scientist who combines strong algorithm design and problem-solving acumen with well-honed engineering and coding skills. You have demonstrated a track record of creating elegant solutions to solve complex problems and the ability to convert solutions to top-class code. And, demonstrated an ability to succeed in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. At Elsevier, your skills and talent will build scalable, high-performing platform services that are at the core of Elsevier’s Health business. You will be responsible for reducing vast and disparate data sets into categorized and useful summaries and knowledge representations, especially knowledge graphs. In addition, you will be responsible for translating data into meaningful insights to help improve user outcomes and experiences, drive product development, and support overall business activities.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Algorithm design and optimization.
  • Data analytics working with a variety of data sources.
  • Design & implement knowledge graphs and knowledge representation models.
  • Apply machine learning (incl. deep learning) to identify patterns in data and build models to drive creative solutions.
  • Design and implement key components of the data, analytics and content discovery platform.
  • Write top-class code that passes rigorous peer review.
  • Design and implement unit tests, functional tests, and regression tests to validate software functionality.
  • Complete complex bug fixes.
  • Keep abreast of new technology developments; apply those techniques for enhancing the system.
  • Interface with the product owner(s) and other technical personnel to groom and finalize requirements.
  • Continually explore methods to enhance code quality and system quality (e.g. automation)
  • Suggests product and project features that understand and meet customer and business needs based on data analysis of product usage patterns and activity.
  • Work with external partners and represent Elsevier at key industry events and with key constituencies especially in Healthcare technology.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced algorithm design and optimization skills.
  • Working knowledge of data analysis algorithms in all major areas including clustering, association, dimensionality reduction, anomaly detection, prediction, and regression.
  • Practical knowledge of machine learning including supervised or unsupervised learning techniques and algorithms.
  • Expertise in knowledge representation and knowledge graphs.
  • Expertise in data structures and practical application of data structures.
  • Expert coding skills including demonstrated rigor in maintaining high code quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to unit, functional and regression test code to meet high code standards.
  • Expertise in building scalable and high-quality software using Java, Scala, Python or C#/C++.
  • Expertise in performance tuning and scaling a software system.
  • Experience implementing search solutions with technologies such as SOLR, Elasticsearch, Lucene is preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of source control and collaborative tools such as Git.
  • Demonstrated ability to be adaptable and successful in a fast-paced environment.
