We are looking for a Scientific Editor to join the editorial team of Joule, the prestigious Cell Press journal spanning disciplines and scales of energy research.  Since its launch in 2017, Joule has quickly gaining a reputation for publishing outstanding and impactful energy research and analysis from around the world.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Joule editorial team to develop and further shape the journal. Responsibilities will include assessing submitted research papers, making editorial recommendations, and overseeing the peer review process; commissioning and shaping review- and commentary-type content; writing preview articles, traveling to scientific conferences and academic institutes; developing strong ties with relevant research communities; organizing scientific conferences; and contributing to Cell Press growth and innovation projects. 

This is a full-time editorial position.  Our preference is for a candidate based at the Cell Press headquarters in Cambridge, MA, USA.  However, we are also open to candidates who would be located in our London, Amsterdam, Beijing, or Shanghai offices.

What we are looking for:

Some of the key attributes that we are looking for in the ideal candidate are
(1) A PhD in a relevant scientific discipline of energy research. Applicants with proven research excellence in the field of electrochemical energy storage are particularly encouraged. 
(2) Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
(3) Proven strong and global research networks and connections
(4) Broad scientific interest in science and publishing
(5) Critical thinking and the willingness to learn and absorb new areas of research
(6) The ability to work successfully both independently and in a diverse global team

  • A selection of 5 recently published articles from other journals that you feel would have enhanced Joule if they had been published in Joule, giving a brief rationale for your choice. 
  • A brief discussion (<500 words) on what you consider to be the most pressing research questions in the field of energy research.
