 You will be responsible for the development and maintenance of a portfolio of 16-18 journals within the Microbiology discipline, in line with our strategy, plans and global objectives. As an ideal candidate you can demonstrate the following abilities:

This role is part of our Science, Technology and Medical Journal (STMJ) Publishing Organisation. STMJ consists of approximately 660 fte based at offices around the globe, including the UK, USA, The Netherlands, China and India. It is responsible for publishing over 1800 journal titles (24% of the global market), with new journal launches and society contract acquisitions ensuring annual growth. There are 4 vertical publishing units: Life Sciences, Social Sciences & Economics (LSSSE), Physical Sciences (PS); Health & Medical Sciences (HMS) and Premium Brands (The Lancet and Cell Press), each headed up by a SVP. The first three units have several scientific/specialty areas, each headed up by a Publishing Director, with responsibility for the strategic approach to their specific audiences which consist of, amongst others, authors, editors, researchers and societies. Your role would report into the Publishing Director for Applied Biosciences within the LSSSE, based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

 

 
Main activities and Responsibilities
  • Portfolio management and development - Acquisition, Non-subscription revenue, contracts & Society liaison (30%) - Overseeing the overall portfolio management, and where necessary guiding negotiation of editorial, society and other contracts.
  • Network and relationship management & development. (30%) - Make an immediate impact by building and maintaining a strong network both with, and beyond, current editors, authors and societies; develop a strong connection/affiliation with the microbiology community and associated stakeholders. Contribute to industry discussions with university and research industry stakeholders.
  • Content development (30%) - Has overall responsibility for portfolio’s content growth and quality strategy, with strong focus on Open Access. Managing content growth organically and where appropriate by acquisition; managing innovation of content formats, peer review, and other areas.
  • Ad hoc projects (10%) - Participate in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation. This could be relevant for the department, related to a pilot for a new product, service or business model or even to improving certain processes within our organization.

Education level and other requirements
  • PhD / Academic degree preferably in the Life Sciences
  • 3 - 4 years relevant Science/Technical/Medical publishing experience; knowledge of the Microbiology scientific community an advantage
  • Willingness to travel at least 30% of time
  • Fluent English (verbal and written)
  • Ideally a track record of full awareness, application and remaining up to date on Technology, Social Media and content enhancement in that context.
  • Ideally experience in working in a complex, matrix international environment
