Job Title:

Project Manager

Purpose of the job:

Manage production process in a way that meets or surpasses goals of profitability, quality, content, and schedule agreed to at proposal and transmittal stages. Includes overseeing of estimating, scheduling and budget control or book and related media projects.

Key Result Area:


• Monitor projects budget and keep track. Should any changes or corrections adversely impact upon the original estimate, inform the appropriate staff so that effective remedial action may be taken with the minimum delay.

• Authorize and process invoices

Maintain Effective Communication

• Ensure all stakeholders are kept informed of material change to the publication in terms of content, specification and schedule. Keep Publishing Services Manager closely informed about the status of projects.


• Appreciate the importance of good housekeeping, both in respect of paperwork and electronic material. Ensure all files are posted to the correct location drives.

Books to be produced in a timely and appropriate manner

• Ensure manuscript is complete before placing with suppliers. Obtain any missing material.
• Ensure suppliers are briefed appropriately for the work to be done
• Ensure brief includes agreement of requirement of level of editing required; any specialist skills required; specific spelling etc.
• Liaise with publishers and authors to resolve any queries arising
• Ensure artwork is supplied and accurately sourced on artwork source list and that it is of suitable quality
• Edit prelim material to incorporate correct Elsevier branding and ensure branding is correct before going to press
• Establish and maintain contact with authors
• Collate author and proofreaders corrections
• Check and approve cover ensuring correct Elsevier branding is used. Check consistency of back cover blurb with internal text
• Agree schedules and ensure proofs are supplied on time
• Ensure all projects are scheduled appropriately and that dates are accurate and updated on internal systems as necessary
• Control day-to-day progress of each project both internally and with suppliers
• Ensure production locations are regularly updated on project progress 
• Quality control spot check on each job

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

·         Educated to bachelor’s degree level or equivalent experience (preference Science Graduates)

·         2-3 experience handling Books, thorough knowledge of print and electronic production and processes
