BASIC FUNCTIONS
This position is responsible for the creation and automation of the Elsevier Cloud while utilizing Infrastructure as Code techniques. Additionally, implement best practices as dictated by Architecture teams.  Provide guidance and direction for DevOps engineers embedded within Elsevier Development teams in consuming and use of developed tools.
 
Strong AWS experience is required to construct an underlying infrastructure platform on which Development teams can utilize to launch customer facing application stacks.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • 10+ years of Systems Engineering experience
  • BS Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent experience required, advanced degree preferred 
 
 
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
  • 5+ years architecting and implementing solutions on Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Microsoft Azure experience a plus.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code practices.
  • Understand use and implementation of Terraform in a distributed environment.
  • Knowledge of version and source code control tools and application build practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux and Windows infrastructure and Administration.
  • Configuration management tools such as Puppet, Chef and Ansible
  • Knowledge of virtual server environments.
  • Working Knowledge of Bash and Python scripts used in automation.
  • Understanding of relational database concepts, SQL, and the ability to run database related scripts.
  • Advanced understanding of system and problem management tools.
  • Knowledge of system recovery procedures within AWS
  • System performance testing and improvements.
  • Strong organization/project planning, time management, and ability to function across multiple projects of various sizes.
 
 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Understand security concepts and building ephemeral infrastructure that confirms to best practices.
  • Recommend and plan use of new system features and services for new products and services to improve overall operation and productivity.
  • Demonstrate expertise and thorough understanding of major system components in completing assigned tasks (i.e., storage systems, Linux kernel, UNIX kernel, UNIX file system, and Windows infrastructure).
  • Advanced communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills. Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills applicable to a wide audience including senior and executive management, customers, etc., including diction/terminology and presenting information in a concise and effective manner to clients, management, and various departments using assorted communication mediums.
  • Act as a mentor to other systems engineering team members, as necessary and appropriate.
  • Work closely with development groups, support groups, and vendors to coordinate operations, and communicate/escalate problems as appropriate to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Diagnose complex system problems using dumps, traces, or other diagnostics aids
  • Diagnose system performance problems using available standard performance tools and system indicators such as queue lengths, CPU utilization, etc.
  • Write commands or processes for execution under multiple system environments.
  • Develop lists/scripts for execution of commonly used processes and automation of simple tasks.
  • Proper management and implementation review of team changes.
  • Proper creation, execution, documentation, and closure of tasks, changes, and requests.
  • All other duties as assigned.
