Press Officer – The Lancet

We are looking for Press Officer to join The Lancet journals. You’ll be working on world-leading, high quality medical research of all kinds (infectious diseases, cancer, dementia, world first medical procedures) on a day-to-day basis, turning this into compelling stories that frequently achieve high profile, international media coverage.

Covering the main Lancet journal as well as our 15 speciality journals, this is a busy role, where the research you communicate aims to change policy and medical practice, and challenge opinion.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing research papers across all areas of medicine to determine newsworthiness, and working with the Media Relations Manager to plan and implement a proactive media relations programme
  • Writing press releases, and working closely with world-leading researchers and editors to ensure accuracy
  • Promoting responsible, measured coverage of Lancet content
  • Managing the day-to-day running of The Lancet press office, including being the first point of contact for enquiries from the media, authors and their institutions, maintaining our international list of press contacts, monitoring media coverage, and helping organise media briefings
  • Monitoring and analysing media coverage and producing coverage reports for editors and authors
  • Supporting the Media Relations Manager to promote major publication launch events
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the Marketing and Communications (including those in our US and China offices) team to ensure Lancet research is communicated in a uniform way across all platforms.

Person specification:

  • 1-2 years’ experience working as a Press Officer in the health or science organisation
  • Excellent writing skills, and experience turning complex research into high quality, accurate press releases that achieve high profile media coverage
  • A degree or relevant qualifications in a scientific/health field
  • Proven interest/commitment in health/medical issues and working in a press office
  • An unflappable and organised approach to your work.

This role may require occasional out of hours work.

To apply for the role, please provide a CV and covering letter.
