Manager, Software Engineering

This Manager of Software Engineering for Cirium, oversees two technical teams at the beginning of Cirium's Flight Status data pipeline – the 'Data Acquisition' and the 'Data Processing' teams.  These are cross functional teams and currently there are 13 team members who report into this role.  The reports range across many engineering levels: Software Engineer II, III, Senior and Lead Software Engineers, and include other roles as well:  a Quality Assurance Engineer, two Data Analysts, and a Program Manager, all co-located in the Portland office.  There are others team members too, such as Site Reliability Engineers and Product Managers who are embedded in both the teams, but who report through different lines of business.

 

The Data Acquisition team brings in status information about flights as they happen, all around the world – so the data is global, real time and high volume.  The team manages flight status data from over 700 sources coming in through various delivery mechanisms and in a variety of formats and the team's job is to standardize the data and make it easily available to all other Cirium teams.  The Data Processing team, next in the data pipeline, owns Cirium's "secret sauce" for making sense out the flight data and adding value to it in a number of sophisticated ways.  Which is to say, we do much more than just aggregate data.  In addition, both teams have developed many internal tools that allow people – from managers to support engineers – to get close to our data and really understand what is happening as it flows through our pipeline.

 

This is an exciting time at Cirium, as we are beginning to leverage data sets from different parts of the business, by fusing them together to form interesting, new data sets and ultimately result in products that are unique and incredibly valuable to our customers.  The Flight Status data set is core to this kind of work and in the Software Engineering Manager role, you will be the specialist and 'go to' person for any new product idea that involves flight status data.

 
 

A valid passport and the ability to travel occasionally within the United States and to the United Kingdom is required.

 
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of professional Software Development experience.
  • 2+ years of people management experience.
  • BS Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred.

  • Excellent problem-solving experience and identifying, researching and coordinating the resources necessary to effectively troubleshoot/diagnose complex project issues; prior success extracting/translating findings into alternatives/solutions; and identifying risks/impacts and adjustments to facilitate management decision-making.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills applicable to a wide audience including senior and executive management, customers, etc., including diction/terminology and presenting information in a concise and effective manner to clients, management and various organizations using assorted communication mediums.
  • Superior collaboration skills and experience.
 
Assets
  • Hands-on experience with some of the software stack, languages and tools currently used by engineering teams in Portland – Java 8, Javascript, Node.js, SQL, React, R, Python, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS cloud-based microservice models, Git, etc.
  • Professional and/or specialized coding skills.
  • Past experience in the aviation and/or travel industries.
 
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for leading teams of both internal and external technology resources.

  • Make short- and long-term decisions in relation to product development strategies.
  • Lead the development of technical standards and perform reviews to ensure enterprise and architectural standards and processes are followed.

  • Recommend technical strategy and direction across functional areas.
  • Consult with stakeholders to find appropriate work-arounds during system outages.
  • Work directly with customers and end users.
  • Design and work with complex data models.
  • Seek diverse ideas and perspectives from a variety of sources to create better solutions, products and services.
  • Carry out people management responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Ensure all staff is provided with the training and resources needed to perform their jobs to the most outstanding degree possible.  Ensure all staff is provided with frequent feedback and coaching, including regular one-on-one sessions, in order to meet and exceed individual and team performance goals consistently.
  • Manage and encourage new ideas from engineers and others to foster improvements through innovation.
  • Empower engineers to be accountable and responsible for their own actions and decisions.
