LEAD SOFTWARE ENGINEER – SERVICES

 

Location: Richmond, London, UK

Reports to: Engineering Manager – Software Delivery

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

We’ve recently embarked on the journey to build our next generation events platform.  The Lead Engineer role at Reed is key to supporting our journey, and to ensure we deliver value to our customers.  The role will partner with the Product Owners and product delivery team, developing requirements and solutions for new capabilities to support our shows. The platform is a green field project which we are incrementally building and learning how to scale.

The Lead Engineer will be able to understanding and translate business requirements for complex workflow systems into a solution design and shaping the backlog for estimation and implementation by the product delivery teams. They will extend the micro-service architecture, maintaining a loosely coupled platform. Service APIs are exposed through an API Gateway kept simple with GraphQL. HOW YOU WILL MEET THE CHALLENGE

To technically lead a highly motivated, passionate, collaborative, close-nit, enthusiastic cross-functional team.  You will draw on your past experience, being highly competent with .Net/c#, design principles, issues of scale & security, competence in CI/CD, with a wide range of COTS and OSS tools and products. You will be designing and creating components, applications and algorithms within the Core Services and also building integrations with services and APIs from other teams.  You will partner closely with the Product owner to develop new business capabilities which adhere to standards, are fault tolerant, scalable, robust and easy to support. You will support your team members and mentor more junior team members.

ABOUT YOU
You will be passionate and have expert knowledge in software development practices and principles. Will have lead cross-functional delivery teams previously. To be successful you will need to be:

• Knowledgeable, confident, collaborative and customer focused with respect to Agile Delivery
• Skilled in Backend and Front-End Web UI development, with an eye for detail.
• Able to use a depth and breadth of experience to support technical issues within the team
• A skilled negotiator obtaining buy–in from, and resolving conflict with various stakeholders.
• Able and enjoy solving problems, taking action and feeling responsible for delivering results.
• Forward thinking and constantly looking for ways to improve with expert development skills.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Proven experience of leading a cross-functional team in an agile environment practicing XP methodology with strong exposure to Scrum or Lean, DevOps & CALMS cultures, requirement elicitation workshops and the end-to-end lifecycle
• Full Stack (o/s to UI) Developer background (from UI to backend to deployment) with a proven track record of developing loosely coupled solutions (SOLID Principles, TDD + Pair Programming, BDD) that are secure, scalable, fault tolerant, robust and reliable.
• Expert in developing ASP.Net/c# (dotnetcore an advantage) applications, windows services and RESTful WebApis
• Experience with software performance optimization and knowledgeable of .Net concurrent programming
• Solid experience service oriented architectures, developing high transactional services at scale.
• Experience of software testing processes including the creation and execution of automated test scripts and the successful delivery of UAT
• Experienced with Domain Modelling, DDD, CQRS, Event Storming, Event Driven Architectures and message Queues (such as SQS, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ)
• At ease with troubleshooting in complex environments through experience using monitoring and logging tools (such as AppDynamics, NewRelic, Splunk, Nagios, Zabbix)
• Demonstrable skills in maintaining and improving CI/CD processes, using build tools, artefact repositories PowerShell scripting, IIS configurations and canary/blue-green deployments
• Mentoring more junior team members

• A polyglot and confident to develop the full stack from through multiple application tiers
• Experience with HPCC, Hadoop, ElasticSearch, or similar and the ecosystems necessary for supporting streaming data, data science and intelligence
• Solid experience developing large scale web facing applications with relevant experience in SQL, MVC, REST, JEE, and JavaScript(JSON/XML) and template languages (such as handlebars, or Slightly), CSS (BEM, SMACSS), and modern JavaScript Frameworks (such as ReactJS, or Angular) and Node.JS
• Cloud and network aware with AWS Experience and knowledge of Load Balancers, Proxy Servers, DNS and CDNs
• You actively participate in the development community.
