Are you an experienced and imaginative journal editor who is passionate about open access publishing and wants to make a difference?  If so, we may have the perfect job for you.

We are looking for a new Lead Editor to take the helm at the broad scope open access journal Heliyon and build it into its next phase of growth.  Heliyon is at an important juncture in its development, and we are looking for a new leader with fresh ideas about how the journal can serve the scientific community most effectively, and who shares our passion for helping researchers publish their work in a straightforward and efficient way.

The Lead Editor will work in close partnership with an internal and external editorial team, plus colleagues across Elsevier including the in-house editors at Cell Press and The Lancet, to ensure that Heliyon provides a valuable resource for the research community and complements our overall journal portfolio.

This is an exciting opportunity to use creative and forward-thinking approaches to shape the future of one of the key components of Elsevier’s commitment to providing a full range of open access publishing options.

Key responsibilities will include:

·       Working with the colleagues to devise and implement strategic and organizational plans for Heliyon

·       Building effective working relationships with colleagues across Elsevier

·       Representing the journal and overall company at scientific meetings

·       Managing the hiring and training of editorial team members

·       Overseeing the contribution of external reviewing editors

·       Coordinating review and publication of direct submissions and referred transfers

As a Lead Editor, you will also travel to scientific conferences and research institutions to directly engage with scientists and to keep abreast of recent research developments.

This is a full-time in-house editorial position.  Our preference is that this role will be based in London, UK, but we are also open to candidates who would be based in other locations where we have editorial/publishing offices.

What you should bring:

·       Broad scientific interests and a passion for helping scientists publish their work.

·       Experience in editorial handling of papers, preferably as a professional full-time editor.

·       Enthusiasm for working with people.  Collaboration and networking are core aspects of the job.

·       A dynamic, results-oriented approach to goals and objectives.

·       A good understanding of digital communication, publishing trends, and open access publishing.

·       Creativity, willingness to experiment, and desire to improve.

·       Strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize, focus, and achieve desired goals.

·       Great interpersonal skills. Collaboration and networking are core aspects of the job.

·       A PhD or other relevant doctoral degree.

·       Managerial experience is desirable but not required.

What we offer:

Elsevier offers an attractive salary and benefits package and a stimulating working environment that encourages innovation. Applications will be held in the strictest of confidence.

We will consider applications on a rolling basis until January 15th 2019. Please include a cover letter describing why you are interested in the job and how your skills and knowledge could contribute to the future success of Heliyon.
