Infographics and Design Officer (2 days per week)

The Lancet is expanding its multimedia offering, and is looking for a part-time (0.4 FTE, 2 days per week) Infographics and Design Officer to produce beautiful, engaging graphics to communicate its vital research. Working in the Marketing and Communications Department, you will translate cutting-edge medical research into elegant and informative graphics and videos, to clearly communicate essential research and help the best science transform society. You’ll be comfortable working with large data sets and complex scientific or health-related content, and know how to tell their stories through engaging, on-brand designs. You’ll need to have some experience producing visual content about scientific material, with a background or strong interest in science and health.

Based in our London Wall office, the role will involve working with editors, authors, and the wider Communications team to produce infographics, video summaries, and other visual multimedia to appear online for stories in the press, healthcare professionals, scientists, and other audiences. 


Purpose of the Job                                                           


As a member of The Lancet's communications team, the Infographics and Design Officer  will work across The Lancet's portfolio to produce high quality visual material to promote and communicate our journals’ content. As part of the Marketing and Communications Department, in close collaboration with authors and our editorial team, you will create infographics and video content for The Lancet group. You will be comfortable working with large data sets and complex scientific or health-related content, and know how to tell their stories through engaging, on-brand designs. The Lancet’s multimedia offering is expanding and developing in exciting new directions, and your work will be an important part of this growth. This is a part time (0.4 FTE) role based in the London Wall office.


Main Activities and Responsibilities     


  • Content production                      
  • Design branded infographics, data visualisations, and illustrations on a short turnaround time, working with the Multimedia Manager, and colleagues in the editorial and communications teams;
  • Edit author-submitted video summaries of research, and produce simple branded graphics to accompany them;
  • Contribute to more complex multimedia projects including interactive online designs, visual abstracts, and longer online content;
    Contribute to the ongoing development of new multimedia formats, providing new ideontras and working with the Communications Team to assess success and impact, and adjust approaches 
Functional and Technical Competencies   
  • Proven ability to create high quality graphics using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (essential)
  • Experience using Adobe Premiere Pro to edit video footage (desirable)
  • Experience using Adobe After Effects to produce simple motion graphics (desirable)
  • Strong narrative skills
  • Understanding of design principles
  • Excellent communications skills

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements)                                         

  • A strong interest or background in science and health
  • Knowledge of basic data visualisation principles
  • Experience working with multimedia in a scientific/health setting
  • Ability to work within a team to collaboratively create graphics (and video)
  • Ability to work independently to short deadlines
  • Experience translating sensitive scientific/health content into accessible, engaging content
  • Awareness of online formats, platforms, and trends
  • An understanding of different means of distribution of multimedia content online
  • Basic video operating skills (desirable)
  • Experience altering designs based on external feedback
