Finance Manager

To support the STM Journals department in Amsterdam, Elsevier is hiring a Finance Manager Primary Publishing.

In this role as Finance Manager, you will be responsible for planning, budgeting and forecasting, as well as financial guidance in strategic decision-making and financial stewardship and governance to the Physical Science and Life Science, Social Science and Economics publishing groups within STM Journals.

This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is intellectually curious, has a proactive and hands-on attitude and knows how to combine a great sense of commercial awareness with relevant business knowledge. You will be based in Amsterdam and report to the STM Journals Finance Director.

About the business

STM Journals (STMJ) is a global business unit within Elsevier, managing Elsevier's world leading portfolio of ca. 2500 scientific and medical journal titles. STMJ employs approximately 900 FTE's, predominantly located in UK, US, the Netherlands and China. The Physical Science and Life Science, Social Science and Economics publishing groups manage a large portfolio of journals and have their main offices in the Netherlands, UK, US and China.

Your responsibilities
  • Act as business partner to senior management in supporting strategic and financial decisions; provide financial oversight and boundaries for strategic planning
  • Design and prepare insightful and forward-looking monthly reports with commentary on variances
  • Provide insight into cost drivers and progression and actively search for new ways to control costs
  • Present financial performance and financial analysis to senior management in both face to face and business meetings
  • Play a proactive role in the further improvement of management information processes and systems
  • Provide constructive challenge to senior management to ensure plans are in place to deliver on financial targets
  • Coordinate the forecasting processes for the primary publishing groups
  • Work with the CoE’s to develop direct cost, labor and other operating expense driver assumptions
  • Provide strong stewardship and governance of the business unit
  • Maintain and improve a strong control environment and process to safeguard the quality of data supplied to the business
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with management teams, CoE’s and all colleagues in the Global STMJ BDS team

Some travel might be required.

What you should bring
  • MSc. Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accountancy, Controlling; or equivalent qualification (CIMA, ACCA)
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in a commercial environment
  • Strong ability to contribute to overall business strategy and drive decision-making in order for the management teams to achieve their strategic goals
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills; any additional languages are a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel; MS office programs and Oracle are preferred
  • Excellent financial technical accounting and management accounting skills
  • Robust knowledge of financial life cycle and processes
  • Affinity with publishing and relevant business knowledge
  • You are motivated to work in an international, matrixed and versatile environment.
  • You take initiative and you can work independently as well as in a team.
  • You have a strong customer-focused mindset and you are able to communicate at different levels.
  • You are stress-resilient, managing competing priorities and processing ad hoc requests fast and accurately.
