Employment Law/HR Practice Editor – XpertHR
 
Overview of role
XpertHR requires a part time (3 days a week - 12 month FTC) editor to work on our compliance and good practice resources.

It's a rewarding role offering interesting and stimulating work directed at meeting employers’ needs for up-to-date information on compliance with employment law, guidance on good practice and practical tools.

Commissioning new and updated content from expert contributors based in the UK and, in the case of our international guides, around the world, the editors will ensure that our content is kept accurate and up to date for our audience of HR practitioners, and that new content is published in line with our high editorial standards.

These roles would suit individuals with, ideally, editorial skills, current employment law expertise and knowledge of HR good practice.

The editors will work alongside a team of UK employment law editors, HR practice editors and others working on XpertHR, the market-leading online HR resource.

Desired skills and experience
Ideally, you should have editorial skills, current employment law expertise, and knowledge of HR good practice and the issues facing employers. You will have good interpersonal skills and the written communication skills necessary to explain both technical legal issues and HR challenges in a clear, concise and accessible way. You will have a good eye for detail, an excellent command of the English language, and good time-management skills. 

Our editors typically have a background in legal practice. We will consider candidates with a similar level of experience and expertise gained in other ways, for example in HR or consultancy. You will probably hold a law degree or similar qualification

Publishing experience will be advantageous. At a minimum, you will need to be confident writing and editing material for a professional audience, and we would expect you to reach the required standard of competency as an editor in good time.

Key responsibilities
Ensuring that the compliance and good practice content on XpertHR is kept fully up to date and adheres to the required style
Commissioning new content when required
Obtaining regular updates from contributors in line with the agreed schedule
Building and managing contributor relationships, including setting clear expectations and deadlines for providing updates and new content and ensuring that they are adhered to
Checking, editing and publishing updates and new content received from contributors, at all times ensuring accuracy, readability and relevance 
Ensuring that updates and new content are published within the required time lines and to the required standard, prioritising publication in line with business requirements
Taking responsibility for specified content and subject/online areas
Keeping appropriate people informed of and recording status and progress on work
Ensuring that all communications with contributors are filed appropriately and diligently
Writing material on existing and forthcoming regulation, HR good practice and cases – at all times ensuring accuracy and readability
Peer-checking colleagues’ work (spelling, grammar, consistency, house style, accuracy, tone, readability)
Legal research, as required
Contributing ideas for new content
Dealing appropriately with subscriber/potential subscriber queries and requests
Identifying and appointing new contributors when required 
Making sure that work by contributors is covered by appropriate copyright, etc agreements and their tax status is assessed and documented
 
Person specification
Accurate and pays attention to detail
In depth knowledge of employment law, and understanding of HR practice and current trends and keeps up to date in these fields
Ability to recognise the impact of legislation, legal regulation and case law on the workplace, and the ensuing practical implications for HR, line managers and business owners
Ability to recognise the impact of HR practice on the workplace and the ensuing practical implications for the HR function and line managers 
Understands the need to tailor information to customers’ requirements
Good work organisation, administration and time management skills
Good proofreading, editing and writing skills
Ability to identify and rectify complex legal text from contributors that may be misleading, unclear or superfluous
Ability to prioritise work to reflect business needs, seeking guidance where necessary
Ability to work under own initiative, taking responsibility for the accuracy and timeliness of output
Ability to work with content management systems to upload, edit, publish and manage online content
Shares skills and knowledge effectively
Good written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, and a positive attitude
In touch with web trends and familiar with social media use
