Elsevier is pivoting the business from selling products (point-solutions) to a platform (called the ROS platform). Sucessfully delivering on that transition requires provision of comprehensive offerings to Elsevier' clients. The platforms themselves can never fully deliver on all requirements laid out by our prospects.

 

The Content & Analytics team provides services that ensure we are strategically positioned to be partners of the leading institutions, funders and governments that we need to serve. We do this by providing bespoke services and development of new services, metrics and analyses. These developments are integral to the consoles strategy, as they serve also for assessment of new features and capabilities of the platform. Examples are new metric development, analytics proof of concepts, API services, Topic of Prominence enhancements etc.

We are looking for a creative, technical, analytical and ambitious individual with a strong personal drive to contribute to the further growth and professionalization of the Research Intelligence suite to support the overall Elsevier Research Platforms strategy and growth ambitions.


Research Intelligence is a set of workflow solutions, tools and analytics serving research administrators, senior executives and policy makers at research institutions, funding bodies, governments or university ranking vendors in addressing various needs around performance measurement, recruitment and securing funds. The Research Intelligence Data Science team is responsible for providing tools and services in the form of analytical reports, customized datasets and bespoke web services and portals. Driven by the increasing need for evidence based and data driven evaluation and measurement of the research performance, the demand for these solutions has increased tremendously over the last couple of years.


You part of a team responsible for developing new analytic reports, custom datasets, bespoke web services (APIs) or portals for external clients like Ministries, Funding Bodies and Research Institutions. You will bring new insights, specific benchmarks or comparisons, relevant analyses and (web) services or applications which helps our clients inform their research strategies and support them in their decision making processes. You are a technical expert, with strong data analytical skills who likes to apply (big data) technology to solve data questions at scale. Our offerings are versatile and flexible and your resourcefulness using all sorts of technologies to analyze, develop, produce and disseminate data (for instance through developing web portals or APIs) is key to success.

In addition you will manage the standardized offerings in the portfolio of the team, consisting of a raw data service, APIs and analytical platforms. This means coordination with teams throughout the organization that develop and maintain the products (Technology and Solution Services) as well as Marketing and Sales for positioning and product strategy development. You be responsible for the product roadmap for these services and represent these products in the Funding Content & Analytics team.


You will work in close collaboration with your colleagues in the Data Science team and others in the Funding & Content Analytics team, other teams involved in the Research Intelligence suite and other stakeholders to build, evolve and maintain our data infrastructure, develop new methodologies and indicators, and provide analytical output for and with other team members and clients directly. You will also connect and work with Product Management, Product Marketing, Business Development, Strategy, Operations, Solution services, other internal stakeholders, business partners and clients.  You will report to the Director of Product Management in Content & Analytics.

 

This  position is based in Amsterdam.

 
What you will bring:
  • University Degree in IT or equivalent
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in data analysis, using relational databases, ETL processes, web services and application development and analytical reporting preferably in publishing or media industry
  • Experience in using Big Data tools such as Spark is preferred. Proven experience in dealing with large (big) data sets and database platforms is required
  • Solid and proven analytical skills, combining strong eye for details with a good holistic view
  • Passion for analyzing big data and an understanding of bibliometrics or scientometrics
  • Fluent in English, preferably a native speaker
