We are looking for a bright, experienced, and enthusiastic individual to maintain, develop, and take complete publishing responsibility for a defined list of 16 Oceanography journals within the Environmental Sciences Journals group and to also work on related projects and initiatives. The role will balance academic research knowledge with entrepreneurial skills and a keen interest in new online developments as well as a strong ability to build partnerships with individuals and institutions with a view to broad long-term collaboration.

The Environmental Sciences Journals group publishes more than 150 high-quality journals, including key publications edited by the best minds in the subject areas as well as some of the fastest growing journals in Elsevier.

The Environmental Sciences journals’ team is currently comprised of 7 publishers in Europe, 2 in China, 1 in U.K and 1 in the U.S.A.


You will report to the Publishing Director in the Netherlands, Amsterdam

Your responsibilities:
  • Develop the strategy for the portfolio; ensure alignment with the department’s and wider organization’s strategies.
  • Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors.
  • Continuous and pro-active maintenance of the existing portfolio, matching developments in the external marketplace, including the development of Open Access initiatives.
  • Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts and networks with key external and internal stakeholders, including editors, authors, society representatives, university leadership and industry, with a view to understanding their professional and organizational needs and ongoing market developments.
  • Develop new content formats and new ways to present content to the customers in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and business partners.
What you should bring:
  • Any Publisher would need to have a strong educational background, an University degree is essential;
  • Minimum of 3 years journal publishing experience;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Can work independently from the rest of the immediate team while also contributing to team initiatives and assisting and advising other publishing staff in the team, and wider company, as necessary.
  • Has a proactive attitude
  • Very good communication & social skills
  • Natural ability to negotiate toward a successful outcome within a given situation, are fundamental. 
  • Willingness to travel internationally 30% of the time
  • Fluent English speaker
