Data Science / Quality Engineer - Data Processing Team

FlightGlobal is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic analyst proficient in building and monitoring analytic tools.  The tools will be used to ensure integrity and quality of our flight data products.  Our data is used by hundreds of customers around the globe including search engines, travel companies, airlines, airports, car manufacturers, insurance agencies, start-ups, educational institutions, and governments.  On average, our products serve over 500 million requests per month.  Our services are highly available, low-latency, and fault-tolerant. The technology stack includes Java and PostgreSQL running on Linux.

Our approach to software development is a modified, flexible, team-based agile process that focuses on incremental improvements that can be well-tested and released within short timeframes.  We are looking for a candidate with knowledge and experience in data analyticscomfortable with a team-centric development process, and with a high degree of motivation for quality engineering and testing.

The team’s primary responsibility is building and maintaining integrated data sets. This role will support that process by providing near-real-time and ad-hoc analytics over our data sets.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience answering specific quantitative questions and identifying trends and patterns in large data sets.
  • Experience developing, testing, and communicating analytic tools and models.
  • Experience using existing data visualization tools and building custom visualizations and reports.
  • Strong statistics background.
  • Experience with current data science tools.
  • Proficiency with SQL systems, especially Postgres.
  • Understanding of software deployment tools and processes.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across functional teams (e.g. engineering, marketing, support).

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with GIS, NoSQL systems, Apache Spark or Data Warehousing solutions.
  • Ability to introspect into the inner workings of large, distributed products built mostly in Java.
  • Understanding of the overall QA process and willingness to collaborate with QA team.

Position Location:

  • This position is an “on-site” position working out of our office in downtown Portland.
  • Our team dynamic favors face to face communication and encourages ad-hoc problem solving, such as an impromptu brainstorm session at the whiteboard. We do allow flexibility in work schedules, including occasionally working from home, but working remotely is not an option.
