Position Description:  

The Clinical Solutions Division of Elsevier is seeking a Technical Sales Engineer to lead technical discussions while involved in our clinical pathways and other advanced clinical decision support (ACDS) product sales activity with the healthcare delivery marketplace.  This individual should be a self-starter possessing strong technical experience, who remains current with IT security trends, and a demonstrated track record of success. This role has a preference to be based in Pittsburgh, PA, but those with qualifications and passion for this type of job who reside in other major US cities are strongly encouraged to apply.


The Technical Sales Engineer will strongly contribute to achieving sales goals by participating actively in technical discussions, answering questions on the technology stack, having a deep understanding of the security protocols we employ to protect customer data, and actively participating in a team-based sale process.  Customers include leading-edge, independent physician practices, hospitals, integrated health networks, and academic medical centers. Specific customer interaction points are information security professionals up to the chief information security officer level, IT architectural professionals up to the chief information technology architect level, and compliance professionals up to the chief compliance officer.


Organizational Overview:

The Clinical Solutions Division of Elsevier uses its industry-leading intellectual property and content to create Clinical and Drug Reference, Patient Engagement, Performance Management, Workflow and Decision Support products for healthcare professionals across a range of practice settings and commercial organizations.  These products and tools aid in disease management, medication error reductions, workflow improvements, effective patient management and economic analysis and cost control.


The Advanced Clinical Decision Support sales division includes Via Pathways, interactive evidence-based tools used by practicing physicians at significant points in clinical decision workflow.  These tools support health systems in achieving their clinical, quality, and operational goals.  The clinical pathways are delivered on the Via Portal, a software platform that integrates with the local electronic health record.

Beyond Via Pathways in ACDS, the Technical Sales Engineer will be given a unique opportunity to participate in sales activities that include a comprehensive set of next-generation tools including: diagnostic support tools, clinical alert tools, and clinical platforms for precision medicine & big data.


The primary responsibility of a Technical Sales Engineer is to support established sales priorities while operating within an assigned expense budget.  Specific responsibilities associated with are as follows:

  • Responsible for the technical sales of Elsevier Advanced Clinical Decision Support products in partnership with the Commercial Advanced Clinical Decision Support Sales team by providing technical sales to the customer technical team, conducting related technical presentations and demonstrations, leading integration discussions, providing or developing technical specifications and requirement gathering meetings, and manage API capabilities.                              
  • Supports requirement gathering and scope of use parameters either onsite or via web conference while working with the customer and sales team during the sales process.
  • Responds to customer questions and requests regarding technical requirements, integration capabilities, security, privacy, and other data related questions.                                   
  • Identifies opportunities to increase market share and growth by addressing the needs of our customers and their technical needs.
  • Provide customer and market feedback to internal teams to influence and impact product enhancements, features, and new product development.                                    
  • Partners with the global internal teams to provide technical expertise at conventions/trade shows and help increase the technical understanding of the sales team through various training opportunities.
  • Trains designated employees on market knowledge, intelligence and opportunities discovered at meetings, trade shows and on key strategic (vendor) relationships and communicate marketing strategy and field knowledge to management.

Education and Skill Requirements - the following minimum requirements are essential:

  • 2+ years Healthcare IT Implementation support (project management and technical) experience
  • 2+ years EHR/Advanced Clinical Decision Support IT/Integration experience
  • Heavy IT (Client/Server applications, HL7, FHIR, OAuth, SAML, ADFS, etc) knowledge and experience
  • Heavy Privacy/Security (NIST, HIPAA, HITECH, SOC2, etc.) knowledge and experience
  • Experience working with interoperability to EHR vendors (Epic, Cerner. Allscripts, etc.)
  • Experience in working with, managing, and resolving customer problems and issues
  • Experience with Excel, Word, MS Project, and Visio preferred
  • Sales Experience preferred
  • BS/BA degree
  • The position reports to the Advanced Clinical Decision Support sales leader.
