UX Designer

TEC001CN Requisition #

We're looking for new UX Designer to join our team of passionate developers with the aim of building a 'LinkedIn' for researchers. You’re going to work on a greenfield project with close to zero legacy code.

The Mendeley Showcase team is a highly collaborative team working with other cross-product Elsevier brands – and even non-Elsevier brands – to provide researchers with an open platform for collecting, managing and promoting their research portfolio. The new, open platform we will create will help researcher promote their impact and successes to others, so they open new doors for their collaboration or funding allowing them to enable their scientific discoveries.

This new open platform product will help researchers promote their impact and successes to others, so they can open new doors to collaboration or funding, enabling them to make scientific discoveries.

The most important thing you do will be to own the user experience for this new product. Your work will be grounded in a deep research-based understanding of our users.  This will show itself in designs that support user needs, and that are delivered through UI designs that are creative but also in line with our master styles.  You will do this through close collaboration with the whole product team.

This is a varied role and will suit someone with a wide range of design skills who enjoys everything from working on early concepts to delivering final UI designs.

Your other important responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the product manager, other designers, and the wider group of stakeholders to understand the needs and practices of science researchers in different domains
  • Prototype concept designs that build on these insights and validate them through user testing or other appropriate methods
  • Your prototypes may range from rough scamps to high-fidelity designs that follow the Mendeley style guide
  • Create UI designs and design patterns that are creative but also aligned with the designs of related Elsevier products.  Where needed, work with the wider Elsevier Design community to update styles across all products
  • Work with the product team to deploy successful designs to production and ensure the final product successfully engages the science-tech community
  • Help build up the design organisation across Elsevier.  Contribute ideas for shaping how design is done across Elsevier

Your strengths:

  • Your strong visual design skills stand out, but you have a broad design skillset covering user research, user experience, and interface design
  • You enjoy working across the full product lifecycle, from establishing the value proposition, to creating and validating initial concepts, to delivering final designs
  • You want to deliver beautiful work that has a positive impact on how science researchers work, but you also know how to move fast when needed
  • Expert knowledge of Sketch, InVision, and similar tools

What you should bring:

  • At least five years design experience
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating design solutions that meet user needs, product requirements, and business goals
  • Experience working with design systems or pattern libraries
  • Be a highly motivated and excellent communicator.  Be able to work independently and collaboratively as needed.  Be passionate about developing superb digital products
  • Experience working in an agile environment with product owners, business analysts and developers.  Any experience of working in a large organisation with different products, teams and stakeholders would be beneficial
  • The ability to understand user needs, think strategically about business opportunities for Elsevier, and develop detailed designs that successfully marry the two
  • Any knowledge of science research or academic communities would be useful
