Elsevier’s Education division is the market leader in educational materials, both books and e-learning solutions, focused on Nursing & Health professionals. We are seeking an exceptional Strategy Manager, to provide data driven, actionable insights to allow for optimization of our management decision making, our corporate and sales strategy as well our pricing and business model strategies.

 

The successful candidate will join a company that operates in a market that is facing rapid changes in both customer demand and technologies. Our traditional books business is facing a strong increase in competition from the used and rental books markets. And in general the education world is experiencing a shift away from traditional content based teaching towards online, interactive learning solutions, including simulations and gaming. Elsevier leads the way in the Nursing & Health education market, and as a key member of the strategy team, you will have the opportunity to make a big impact.

The opportunity

 

The NHE organization is looking for a strong analytical resource that is a thought leader and strategic thinker.  Key responsibilities include:

 

 Strategy development  

  • Help drive the strategic agenda for NHE

  • Work closely with the business to drive the understanding of changing user and customer needs and competitor developments

  • Prepare strategy presentations for executive leadership 

  • Initiate strategic deep-dives on new market and product developments

  • Develop key financial models to assess impact of new product development

  • Build and own models to track progress of key strategic initiatives across business

Driving Strategic projects

  • Identify and lead strategic projects across the business, working directly with product, platform, and commercial teams, in such areas as:

    • Accelerated growth strategies

    • New product/offering development

    • New business models

M&A activities

  • Help drive M&A activities, including scanning the market, establishing target lists, summarizing key targets fit with the business strategy, estimating target size and market size/growth

  • Work with Elsevier Business Development team on the deal process; own commercial due diligence and overall planning.

What you should bring

  • Ability to manage strategy projects from start to finish: from work plan to recommendations

  • Creative and pragmatic problem-solving skills

  • Excellent analytical skills – ability to apply objectivity and rigor to problem solving

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with dedication to developing lasting partnerships

  • Strong leadership skills, able to work independently and set pace and direction for goals and objectives

  • Financial acumen: able to link strategy to finance and commercial performance

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to synthesize findings clearly and present on executive level

  • Exceptional quantitative skills, e.g., ability to perform statistical analyses of complex datasets

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, entrepreneurial approach

  • Must be able to travel (~30% of time) 

  • Excellent university degree and preferably an advanced degree (MBA) from a top 20 school

  • Minimum of 2+ years’ strategy experience, including at least 2 years with a top-tier strategy consulting firm
