We are looking for a Junior/ Research Executive to join the Customer Insights team in Oxford.


Our goal is to have best-in-class customer insight capability and ensure it is a strategic competitive advantage. Reporting into the Research Manager, you will join a high performing team that brings a large organisation closer to its customers. The team act as an in-house market insight agency, as such we design, plan, and deliver insight projects from start to finish.


This role will support several global customer studies. The (Junior) Research Executive will be exposed to a mix of approaches to research and different forms of analysis and will be involved in various stages of the research process including: questionnaire design, data collection and analysing the results that underpin the engaging stories we tell our business partners.


Main activities and responsibilities

  • To assist in the management of our customer experience programmes, which includes our tracking programmes monitoring the view of the users of our products and services, as well as supporting on bespoke ad hoc studies. This includes:

    • Supporting on needs analysis, questionnaire design

    • Management of sample for studies, including identifying and de-duping sample.

    • Assisting with analysis of feedback to deliver customer insight. Manipulating data files to help complete analysis of customer trends

    • Understanding and refining when needed, the scripts, used to generate the various analyses

    • Support managing customer queries received via our studies - respond to queries 


  • Be involved in small scale tactical studies to help deepen our understanding of the market

    • Support the planning, designing and analysing for such research studies.


  • Provide support on large scale strategic studies that benchmark key Elsevier products and thought leadership studies, which are often made available publicly


  • Communicating customer insights

    • Support the release of quarterly updates into the business by helping to produce insight reports that are shared via on our internal dashboard.

    • Take part in Customer Insights roadshows which take place in Elsevier’s main offices around the world.




Functional and Technical Competencies

  • Self-starter with good project management skills, able to balance several projects at once and work to tight deadlines.

  • Inquisitive and keen to learn. Able to identify interesting patterns in data sets.

  • Good communicator who works well with the team and business colleagues.

  • Has a knowledge of statistics – prior experience whilst an advantage, is not a requirement (training will be provided).

  • Experience of running web-based questionnaires. ConfirmIT experience particularly advantageous.

  • Comfortable preparing PowerPoint presentations, good eye for design.

  • Excellent computer skills: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Sharepoint. Knowledge of applications such as SPSS. R or survey tools advantageous. Familiarity with HTML is helpful.



Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of market research techniques, particularly quantitative research advantageous.

  • 1-2 years relevant work experience required for Research Executive level.

  • Hard working, methodical and organized, with strong attention to detail

  • A perfect command of both written and oral English is a pre-requisite.

  • A keen interest in science and medicine.  

  • Some international travel may be required.
