Purpose of the Job:
The Product Manager is responsible for the planning and execution of Nursing solutions and Education Solutions for Japan to drive revenue generation and increase market share. This implies the identification of areas of opportunity, creation of product strategy, and product development.
The primary responsibilities for this position are to identify customer needs in terms of content and solutions, and develop products working with stakeholders. The focus lies on electronic solutions, to increase sales and profitability in Nursing and Education domain in Japan market.

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

Develop and launch products

- Manage the build cycle of the product/solutions with business case approved - working with key stakeholders and acting as the single point of decision making for / subject matter expert on the product
- Work with the technology teams in defining architecture of the product and supporting systems
- Work with content group to fulfill content needs for the current and future platforms
- Work with sales and marketing teams to develop and execute the go-to-market plan (including commercialization, positioning, channel and customer support strategies)  within timeline and budget
- Work with operational teams to define supporting processes for the product
- Ensure internal capabilities and resources


Evaluate and evolve existing products

- Continuously review and reflect improving process, content and functionality to improve ROI
- Collect user feedback and ensure it is being incorporated to future product improvements
- Actively collect and report on key product measurable (e.g. usage, user feedback), in relation to known performance targets, and produce improvement plans where needed (e.g. content updating, customer service)
- Track post-launch results against plan and build findings into strategy; update marketing and sales plans
- Determine product roadmap and release plan based on customer feedback to define future development phases for the product
- Recommend marketing and sales activities and targets for upcoming year
- Oversee the tracking, analysis and reporting of all above initiatives to maximize efficiency and effectiveness
- Effectively communicate results and insights to other key stakeholders


Define business strategy and objectives for the sub segment

- Define products strategic direction in line with market requirements and business  strategy together with key stakeholders
 - Analyzing business models for various product concepts and solutions
 - Validate opportunities & targets through market sizing, market segmentation and determine selling channel and model
 - Define and agree on overall business and financial objectives and targets
 - Contribute to the overall sub segment strategy through knowledge of market, competitor and industry conditions, internal strategies, customer needs and available technologies


Develop deep market and customer understanding

- Research and analyze overall market landscape, competition environment and understand future key trends that will affect product/solutions development initiatives
- Execute market/end-user research
- Maintain service standards by effectively responding to customer requests; this  includes soliciting feedback on segment's performance and communication key account concerns internally and externally
- Assess customer needs and 'pain points' (in collaboration with Global/Local Sales, Marketing and product teams)
- Develop key business relationships (channel, content, customer/advisory board, etc.) and actively promote the Elsevier brand and solutions in its territories


Define new products

- Research and analyze sub segment specific products/solutions

- Determine and define the different targets

- Communicate the value proposition of the products to the sales team and provide direction to marketing

- Contact customers and build focus groups to review proposed new products/features

- Develop key business development relationships (channel, content etc.)

- Conduct pricing analysis; determine pricing with key stakeholders and Elsevier Pricing Team

- Deliver, together with Segment Director, the business cases for proposed products or product enhancements - with full financial analysis

- Product and Project management skills
- Product life cycle management skills
- Understanding of the digital education and health technologies
- Extensive knowledge of Japan healthcare and education markets a strong plus
- Able to build strong relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders (Required)
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills; fluency in English (Required)
- Experienced in working in an international matrixed organization (Desirable)
- Flexible, proactive, "hands on" approach with an enthusiastic "can do" attitude


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements)

A Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
Demonstrated aptitude for all aspects of product management, with past experience of working with technical teams to articulate business requirements and ideally some content commissioning or creation experience.
Minimum +3 years as Product Manager in relevant field
Prior experience in developing e-product/e-solutions business plans (technology expertise will be highly valued)
Proven experience in introducing new products into local/international markets
Deep experience in the medical or healthcare businesses (market and customer knowledge)
Proven track record managing e-products and successful project management (turn parts into solutions)
Experience in a matrix & global structure working collaboratively & effectively across functions & boundaries
